checking for rust

over the winter while the sho isnt on the road i thought i'd take the side moldings and rocker covers off and check for rust or rot. my car is basically completely rust free as far as i know except for one small spot but for a new england car this seems to good to be true, so i wanna check and make sure my rocker covers arent superglued or tied on like i've seen on other cars. if i do this i wanna wax the crap out of everything under there while its off. does this seem like a good idea or a waste of time. i know taking the door panels out isnt a big deal and everything else is just screws so it seems worth while.

That is the best thing you could ever do for your car. Up here is not the same as Florida, and it is a miracle that the cars last as long as they do. The rocker panel area will be worse than the doors. Look way under till you see that long seam that used to have a notch to locate your crank jack. If that is still there, you are ahead of the game! If you have some discoloured paint, you can get an exact match from automotivetouchup.com; you need the paint code from your door. Then clear coat all those areas before you wax anything. Buy the clearcoat locally (spraycans) and get all your matching paint at once as it is $10.00 to ship one can or 4 cans.

Just pop that rocker cover... both end caps are 2 little bolts / push pins... then there are a few across the bottom.. but it will tell all for sure. Passenger side is generally a little more "ahead" of the driver side.

I'm considering getting this car I have from Cali Ziebarted.. because if I do, and it rusts later on.. they fix it free.

Pull the panels off and see if everything is ok if so, make sure the door drains and rocker drains are clear of debris or rust then make a cocktail of trany fluid/oil/ and deisel ( I know your thinking wtf trust me on this ) in a squirt can. Pop your door panels and spray inside the door with this mix and inside the rocker drains. don't let this mix get on the paint. By doing this it will help lubracate/ displace water so rust cannot form ( an old time hotrod restorer showed me this trick ) I have done this on every s.h.o I have ever owned and even on my brothers s.h.o and no rust all solid. He even drives his all winter

peel the carpet back and check where the front door posts meet the floor. the area under the stock air box is another favorite spot. then pull the front bumper and check around the hydraulic mounts. tops of the rear strut towers. can you tell I reside in the rust belt?
