Got a gas smell outta the blue, present after driving for a while, assuming it could be that, but my friend was saying that after 191,000 miles its not uncommon to be plugged. I'm going to buy the vap canister, but also wanted to see / check that cylanoid (sp?) to make sure its working correctly.

Can I just put 12V on it and see if it actuates? I'm assuming its closed until it sees 12V ? And is it a completely open / completely closed kind of valve? Or is it a variable thing?

It's either open (energized) or closed (de-energized).

Yes, you can apply 12V to it to see if it opens. Observe original polarity.

The device is common across many Fords, it is not SHO specific.

I was wondering... since I didnt get a code I bet the thing works... I did however notice a dark colored hose that looks like it needs to be replaced.. the one from the lower T up to the canister. I'm going to replace that and drive it for a bit see if it goes away.. If not I'll get that thing and see what happens then. That cylanoid is soooooooooo old lookin.. lol I should replace it just because its an eye sore.. :)

Edit: Gotta order it .. no one around here carries one... so I got a new fuel filter, and a gas cap, to try to eliminate any other mysterious leaks in the system. Only other possible one could be @ the tank, but the smell is strong up front. Evap canister looks fine, no cracks.. just dirty.. That was one of the hoses I forgot about and meant to replace.. :) The ones @ the cylanoid are new.. :) Anyway.. I'll give it a few days and let ya know what happens. I've noticed my gas mileage has dropped while this has happend. I wonder if I was running lean or something? I mean I went from 22-24 city, down to about 18.. very noticable... time will tell.. I pulled codes, and 111 so I dunno?

Well, after another fill up and mileage check... 19 this time.. and that was after 50 miles of driving, 35 highway 65mph 5th gear the entire time. And the rest of it in town I was babying it. 3 Wot to 65 mph or so.. but other than that... I shouldn't be that low .. :) After I put another 50-60 miles on it, I'll let ya know what happened to the mileage.. kinda just lost it outta the blue, and the only thing different I noticed was that gas smell...

Well the best I've done is 29-30 highway. Filled up right next to the highway, and did 70 mph for about 60-70 miles or so. Normally I see high 20's on highway, and low 20's in town. I can say after driving it now what I thought was an IAC issue, isn't so. My RPM's drop now when I hit the clutch like they should. Before they wanted to hang around 1500 or so, then fall slowly or once I stopped. I don't know if thats it or not, I do notice its a bit different idling, and I think thats kinda intresting.

And mine's an MTX so i *should be getting a little better mileage. Makes me wanna go for a drive to see what I'm getting. :)

The solenoid was probably fine, how old is your fuel pump? I was getting about 22 on the highway in my 92 until the fuel pump went out and I put a 190lph I had sitting around in it. Now I get 32 on the highway cruising at 72, which is what I get in my 93 atx. I barely get 20 in town though, if I baby it.

Well IIRC, I replaced the FP at the same time I did my timing belt, granted it was years ago, I think its only got about 20k miles on it. I did however notice a FP secondary circuit code in memory a few weeks ago, but havent seen it since.

I just went through the same problems with the fuel smell and lower miliage and hope that I have it solved. Today I worked through the EVAP system to find that the rubber hoses up front to the carbon canister needed to be replaced - most of it was 3/8" hose. Also at the T fitting on the bottom of the radiator support, take a close look at where your getting vacuum and where you are not - its not just a T fitting :) It has a TINY orafice that goes to the gas tank and mine was clogged up with all kinds of yellow crap so there was no vacuum being pulled on the gas tank!!

Just replace it. Mine went to shit and had the same symptoms....eventually, it got so bad that the car wouldn't stay running. It'd die in midstream and be an absolute bitch to start back up again. Replaced that obnoxious little booger and she's happy again.
