The rear cam seal I replaced 500 miles ago started leaking. I found the rubber lip that contacts the cam had become distorted, and oil was leaking there. It was not distorted when I installed it. I'm reasonably confident I didn't err on the install; I used lots of ****, the cam is not scratched, and it was firmly seated using a PVC coupling. I am suspicious of the Felpro TCS45870 cam seal kit I used, which has National K32138R seals in it. I ordered the Ford seal, E9DZ-6700-A, to replace the failed one. It is made in Japan, markings: NOK, PN BH2737E. To my eye, the NOK seal is superior in construction to the National seal. The seal I originally replaced was a NOK seal, and it had gone over 120K miles with only the slightest seepage. I wonder if the National seal is a true metric seal, or a close enough approximation by National? I put the Ford seal in without sealer because there was no evidence that there had ever been any used, and I noticed the seal went in very easily, maybe too easily. Maybe these things can shift position once the head warms up and the AL expands? Anyway, I thought better of it and pulled that brand new Ford seal out and then put in my spare using RTV around the perimeter like the FSM calls for.

I had a similar issue when I installed the felpro cam seal set. Every seal I'd try to install would come out looking like this. . . . . . 1188033624 ORIG

I ended up going with the Timken (1213N) seals from AZ. Not a drop of oil afterwards.

I had a bad set of cam seals as well. I replaced them with some more felpro seals, but I am beginning to think that I wasn't the problem. Box says Made In Japan, seal says made in Mexico.

Yes, the OE seals are a way better design than the aftermarket ones used in Fel-Pro's kits, I will never use anything else untill I can get them no more through Ford

Fel-Pro cam seals for the SHO have been documented to be the wrong ones (Fred H. was the first one to point this out) since 2002 or so. They are too big.

Use a National 1213N or equivalent seal and you'll be fine.
