I'm upgrading my system within the next few days and, as the title states, I plan on powering the components via the built-in HU amp and running a small 8" sub in the back with the stock JBL ~85w RMS amp.

Is this possible? To my knowledge the sub amp gets it's juice from the stock amp, which I plan on eliminating. Buying a harness is a possibility, though not preferred.

I tried a few searches, and couldn't locate a definite answer.

Any info / help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks :thumb:

Ok, I bypassed the component amp no problem with the built-in bypass harness tucked under the dash. All I need to do now is wire up the sub. The wiring already goes to the trunk from the dash via the eight-prong plug that looks similar to the CD slave cable.

The power to the JBL sub amp is hooked-up already, I'm not touching that. There's a plug on the right-side of the sub amp that has three wires from the component amp - a larger gauge clear wire (positive sub), the same gauge black wire (negative sub), and a smaller gauge wire that looks to be unshielded (power-on sub amp)... ??

All I need now is to find out which of the wires from the 8-prong plug that goes to the stock JBL HU are the positive speaker, negative speaker, and power-on component amp wires. I can then splice the three wires I need in the dash to the aftermarket HU and splice the three same wires in the trunk to the three-prong plug on the right side of the sub amp.

In my mind, this should theoretically work. Unless I completely do not understand the premium JBL system and I'm completely overlooking something... which is definitely possible :nut:

Down to the topic: anyone have any idea at all which three wires I would need out of those eight in the dash?

Anyone have a harness that they plug into this stock plug that tells them which wire is which? All I need is the color codes for the positive, negative, and power-on that go from the plug in the dash to the component amp.

Thanks!!

I'm a turd, I can use any of the eight wires in the dash that go to the trunk as long as the colors are the same at either end... :nut:

The black box unit? You mean the component amp (on the right) or the sub amp power supply (in the middle)? The one in the middle has to stay if you plan on keeping the sub amp.

Well, I spliced and diced and everything is working. Aftermarket HU, aftermarket components powered by the HU, and an aftermarket sub in the stock box powered by the stock sub amp.

Low-and-behold, you do not need the component amp to work the sub amp. :thumb:

If you're talking about the sub enclosure, there's 4 nuts on the top deck you need to loosen and remove. The sub box will then drop down into the trunk.

The easiest way, IMO, to get to these 4 nuts is to remove the back seat and then yank on the top deck cover (with the carpet and the speaker grills) to remove it. Chances are, your rear seatbelts will be the only thing still "attached" to the top deck cover.

There's a layer of matting covering the nuts, locate the 4 pre-punched holes and remove the matting for these holes to access the nuts.

Remember, you'll need to disconnect the sub box from the sub amp to remove it from the trunk.

Maybe it was just mine but I removed 4 nuts on the trunk side. Needed a long extention for the front 2 but the back 2 are cleary visible.
