After a long search using the words "Turbo" and "Size", my mind began to stray. I'm curious about cheap turbochargers that are abundant, out dated and OE for the most part. Units that come to mind are older Supra tubos, small diesel turbos and the GN turbo. From what I've read, it's a modified T3(Garrett) with an adjustable wastegate. I'm no expert but it seems like a T3 would be too small in terms of flow potential(For a SHO 3.0). However, it gets the job done for ~275hp from a 3.8. This seems suitable for adding a small amount of power(around 80hp) to a SHO motor. Any thoughts??

I am only trying to gather information at this point so anything USEFULL is good.;) Thanks.

a gn turbo should be ok for a "starter turbo" if u want a lil more try to find a turbo off a mitsubishi evo... a "big" 16g or even the "small" 16g will do great for a sho if all u want is 80 or so hp more... i use the small 16g.. it spools instantly and holds full boost to 8k make plenty of power (tho i still want more hehe) its just a thought... they are cheap and always on ebay for decent price.

just my 2 cents

-Turbo Bob.
p.s. the small 16g is good for 350hp.. the big i think is good for 385hp.

In hanging around the turboford and XR4Ti forums I heard a lot of talk about the Holset turbos from the early Dodge Cummins engines. I think that just about any small or midsize turbo will spool instantly on the SHO motor and be a helluva lot better than no turbo.

I would not neccessarily just throw any "small or midsize turbo" on a SHO motor. Yes, it will spool almost instantly, and will be better than no turbo, but, a small turbo like the one I used to have on my remote setup, will be easily overspun and possibly destroy itself, and your motor. I know this because I had a turbo off of a 1984-ish chrysler lebaron, thinking it was going to be almost perfect for my remote setup, maybe a little small though. I overspun it bigtime, and melted the bearings. The turbo bits flew into my intake path, and were stopped by my intercooler setup. Also, the turbo spooled so quickly, that it opened the wastegate to soon. I saw very little boost, even with my Manual boost controller all the way up I should have been seeing 20+ psi off this turbo and I was seeing 5-7. when I put on my new turbo, I saw 15 with the boost controller backed out over halfway from where it was with the old turbo. Yea small turbos will work, but if you start seeing problems, you might want to look into something in a different size.

Sorry Tom, I'm not picking on you I swear.:p

HAHA, no offense taken at all. I agree with you 100%. The LaBaron ran the 2.5 and that turbo is too small. That's the one I ran on my Toyota 2 liter motor in my other buggy, and the Yota motor would out flow that turbo.

The point Nick is wanting to make is more of a nitrous replacement than a full all out power maker, so I think any mid size turbo will be more than sufficient. I'm going to look at a Garrett today off of a PowerStroke for "make offer" dollars. We'll see.

I'll agree with this 100%. I'm using a smallish-midsize turbo and, it works great. Throwing it on got me to beat a supercharged SHO hitting 10psi while I had something wrong with the motor. as you stated though, any turbo is better than no turbo.

you can find those holsets for real cheap but you have to know how to rebuild them or else theres no point in buying it, cuz it would probably destroy itself.
