BUCKING CURED!

I might actually be liking this car again. I decided to clean the MAF and while doing this the one wire was completely back after spraying cleaner and carefully wiping it off the car does not buck anymore. Before I did this is would buck badly from about 3/4 throttle on. Now my problem is if I floor it (all the way) it will accelerate slowly, but if I let up some on the gas it moves. This does not sound normal but I am no mechanic. I know my front O2 sensor is on the way out, could it be some of my problem? It is indicating a code 176 when I get on the gas (floor it all the way). The check engine light will come on when I go to WOT and go off a minute or so later when I let up.

Please help!

P.S. It only does this in 4th or 5th gear. In any other lower gear 1,2,3 I can floor it and you can hear the secondaries kick in and it will take off. I know not to floor it in 5th at 50mph but it still does this at 70mph too.

Well I decided it was time to pull that intake off and replace the gaskets and wires along with the plugs. It took me a total of about 2-2.5 hours to remove the intake. Take into account this is my first time EVER doing anything like this, I am proud. Judging by the amount of oil in the rear wells, the spark plug wires couldn't have been doing there job very well!

Is it normal for the intake to have black crap on the walls? What should I do about this crap?

yes it is normal for the intake to be dirty. The solution to removing the "black crap" is Berryman's B-12 Chemtool. Very strong stuff, keep away from rubber, paint, asphault, your hands, etc, it will destroy it all. Just get a few cans and start spraying, and you'll see it all come off with the spray!

Good job with tackling this. It looks more intimidating than it is. You labled everything as you took it off right? I also hope you put new plugs and wires in instead of reusing the old ones. I think you'll be even happier with your cars performance. wink

Yeah, gonna do new plugs and wires. Looks like I am going with AutoLite APP3924 and AutoLite wires. No parts place around here has motorcraft plugs "for" the SHO and the same with wires. I pulled the front 3 spark plugs after thoroughly cleaning the wells....the spark plugs I pulled were AutoLite 3924.

The only problem I have with this car is that everything is either a dealer item or special order. I could not find any parts stores with a wire set in stock, and the same with the valve cover set. **** a few of them told me they could get a set (non-Felpro) which only included the valve covers and they wanted $88. I ended up paying $4.20/each for the plugs but they have a 5 year gaurantee.

Aftermarket stuff is usually ok, but from the feedback on plugs and wires i think it's generally best to go motorcraft. I hear most aftermarket's don't give good performance over time. You might consider switching back to oem sometime. Try Torrie at Ford Parts Network for dealer parts(3.99 plugs) and Autozone.com for Fel-Pro. Ask around about Autolites performance. thumbs_u

Yepper, autozone was able to special order the gasket set. Although I wish I had waited until I took the valve covers off b/c the seals in there now look decent and they did not tear (a little sealer and they probably would have lasted a while longer). I was planning to get the plugs and wires from Ford Parts Network but I am pressed for time now because it was a spur of the moment decision to tear into it. SHOTIMES write up on the spark plugs and wires says that the wires are almost identical to stock ones....the plugs however are a 1/16" bigger than stock.
