So I just did my 96 brake upgrade, stops wonderfully. But as I'm test driving waiting at a stop sign I realize my brakes are smoking! So I pull over and take a look and smoke is flowing out from the calipers and kind of the rotors. After doing a lot of braking I return home to inspect what is happening and both front brakes are smoking from the calipers, kind of smells like burning pads but I have no brake fad at all. I used Caliper brackets from a 95 Lincoln Continental, 96 SHO rotors, Friction Master ceramic brake pads (Do I really need 95 Lincoln Continental calipers?). They had the glue on backing plates. It's ether the pads are frying, the glue is burning, some rubber is frying, and the caliper brackets had some grease on the mounting to the calipers?! Any ideas, Thanks in advance

Is it smoking real bad????

Plus if you have no brake fade, id say you didnt take the coating off the rotors with brake clean.

Drive it a little while or if you want pull the wheels off and inspect everything.

I used brake cleaner from Advance auto parts. It didnt have any air in it so I just punched a hole in the side. Cheap stuff maybe?

Was there a oil coating on the rotors? If there was it could be just oil burning off, the oil can be in the vents also.

Yes there was a coating on the rotor, I cleaned most of it off but I did not clean inside the vents. I will drive some more and hopefully it will stop smoking. I just didn't want all my money that I spent burn up. Thanks for your help. Have you heard of this happening before?

I had a similar problem with mine after doing a brake job. The angles on the corners of the backing plates of the pads didn't quite match the ones on the caliper bracket. This cause them not to seat quite far enough down into the bracket. When I installed the calipers, it forced the pads onto a bit of an angle, causing them to drag, resulting in very hot brakes during the test drive. Just took a little bit of filing to get them right.
