Brake suggestions?

Hi,

This spring I'll need to get new brakes on my '98 SHO. I've been looking at Tirerack.com, since that's where I bought my tires from (which I love), and so far I've picked out the following:

Front: EBC Greenstuff pads with EBC sport grooved rotors

Back: Brembo rotors with Satisfied Pro ceramic pads

Basically, I want something that's going to give me good performance (just street driving), and won't warp so easily like the OEM ones (the main reason I need new brakes).

Good? Bad? Indifferent?

Performance Friction Carbon Metallic(PFC)brand pads. $60 to $70 per axle. Add to that the cheapest rotors money can buy $15 to $20ea. This is the deal.

The GreenStuff pads are good, but they are still squeaking for me (about 700 miles on them now.) It's now quieted down a lot, and it only occurs after the pads and rotors have been heated up by a few hard stops.

I am using the plain Brembo rotors. From what I have read here and on V8SHO.com, you won't see much benefit from the slotted, dimpled, or drilled rotors unless you are really working the brakes at the track.

With the plain rotors, I have ZERO brake fade, even after about ten 80-0 stops in rapid succession. In fact the Greenstuff pads just keep getting stickier as they heat up. I have heard similar results with the PF Carbon-Metallics.

For the rear, I like the Ford pads. The rear rotors aren't really all that critical, so use whatever you can get cheap. The Brembos aren't the cheapest, but they're cheap enough, and good quality, IMO.

I'm replacing the rear brakes on my '97 this weekend, if the weather cooperates. I picked up the cheaper of the two sets of rotors they sell at AutoZone, around $18 each, and a set of Ford (not MotorCraft) pads at the stealer for $82 including tax. Also picked myself up a new floor jack and jack stands, since I have to do this work at my place and not my parents' place 300 miles away. All in all, even with the extra tools, I should be able to get out of it for less than going to the stealer, and I know exactly what's going onto the car.

As far as the fronts, for the street, I know that Paul and a few others still swear by AutoZone rotors and Ford (again, not Motorcraft) pads. Hit v8sho.com and check out the "care and feeding" section for brake links. There are instructions for changing them as well as part numbers for different pads.

When it comes to pad life and rotor life and wear, the most important factors are proper lug torque, and proper break-in.

I tend to warp my front rotors on '97 SHO also and am looking at upgrading to something better than stock. I was considering the stock size brake upgrade kit from SHO Shop.
They list "two high tensile steel, quality brake rotors that are less prone to warping, and a set of our brand metal-carbon brake pads".
Has anyone used these and how are they? Are the stock Ford rotors cast iron or steel? What are the AutoZone rotors make of?
