Couple questions. Can anyone tell me how far the input shaft sticks out of the bellhousing on a 5 speed? Also, can somebody tell me the measurements from the center of the input shaft to the bellhousing bolt holes?

I don't think it sticks out past the edge of the bell housing at all. What are you planning?

I have a 74 Datsun that I want to put a SHO engine in. Found a couple of engines local and reasonable. Dont really want to go the t5 route because I dont think it will support the power and abuse. Eventually will be supercharged. I have a TR3650 out of 05 Mustang GT. The shop I work at has some machining capabilities so an adaptor plate wont be that difficult. Also I think I can have an 8 bolt flywheel modified to fit the sho crank then rebalanced. Bolt holes are off by 1/8th of an inch. Only thing i'm worried about is the 3650 Bellhousing fitting under the front bank head. Also the input shaft sticks out of the 3650 5/16 of an inch so I need to account for that when I figure the adaptor plate thickness. Gonna be a pain, but those trannys are tough and plentiful.

Why not reuse the sho flywheel, just have it redrilled for a clutch that will work w/ your trans?

And i know a Chevy bolt pattern trans fits under the head just fine, and thats not exactly a small pattern to work w/

got a clutch with the trans. It's an 11". dont think it would fit on the sho flywheel. Also I am hoping to use the mustang starter so I need the right flywheel to make it all work.

an 11" flywheel comes within .57 inch of the one alignment pin and within .27 of the other, the adapter plate in these areas cant be more then 1/4" unless you space the flywheel away from the crank, which then starts to cause problems with getting the input shaft to seat in the crank.

i do have a 1/4" steel adapter plate thats a reject, laser cut for the sho pattern + the chevy pattern, and if you dont mind ignoring some old bolt holes and drilling some new ones for the ford pattern it would make a great starting point for ya.

So is the input shaft on a SHO 5 speed even with the bellhousing? Inside the bellhousing? Can someone throw a tape measure on it?

Nik97 on this Forum has already solved that problem. Send him a PM or search for his posts about his NotchBack with a SHO motor.

HotRodKid, you get my PM? Very interested in the adaptor plate. Anyone, still looking for how far the input shaft sits inside the bellhousing.

T5's have been taking abuse in mustangs a long time before the SHO came around. People in my mustang group are putting down 400+ ft lbs on a stock t5. If you think that wont do it they have PLENTY of upgrades for a t5 to make them very durable. Also there is already a adapter plate available for a t5 swap.

edit - Im just guessing here but i think the money you save not using a T5 based trans will be blown very quickly getting all the other parts to fit. But if that's what you want to do more power to you.

I mean no offense by this but it sounds like you don't have anything but a mustang tranny and clutch. I would get a SHO motor and MTX first. Spend some time making your own measurements and fitments, if you really want to tackle a project like this it will NEVER be as easy as you think. Ask the other few on here who have done it. Good luck.

Im not asking for opinions. I simply asked for measurements. Not trying to be a dick just tired of people trying to disprove what I am doing. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't but when people like you chime in with your two cents, its not helpful. If you dont know the measurements, don't reply to the post. Just want to try something different.

OffroadSHO, I would greatly appreciate if you could measure for me. Thanks

Sorry, I forgot. The Input shaft on the SHO's MTX sits 1.29" INSIDE the bell housing. And as far as a T-5 or Tremec 3550 or any other north/south transmission's input shaft not reaching the pilot beraing in the crank (when you use an adaptor plate) , they make bushings just for extending the pilot hole away from the crank. Not a problem. Anything else you need, let me know.
