Elgin OPP have released the name of a 22-year-old Malahide Township man killed on Friday at a workshop just west of Aylmer.

Elgin County OPP say the man was an off-duty employee at Elrus Aggregates.

He was working alone under a personal vehicle, which was being held up on one side by a jack. At some point, the vehicle fell off the jack and onto the man.

The ministry of labour was contacted and helped in the investigation. An autopsy was done, and revealed that foul play wasn’t involved in the death.

Jacob Peters, 22, of Malahide Township, was identified as the victim.

I think just about all of us are guilty of being under a car that was only on a jack while we were under it.

and just peaking your head under for a split second counts on this one.

My heart goes out to that mans family, let us all learn from his mistake. It takes only a second to place jackstands under a vehicle and it can surely prevent serious injury and death. As being I am employed as a mechanic and have been repairing cars professionally for the past ten years I know first hand the dangers of having 2 tons of metal hoisted above your head and even when secured on a hoist six feet off the ground one wrong move can bring it all down on top of you. Joke if you must, I know I do, just remember that safety should always come first.

Hearing stories like this make me squirm especially since I was the victim of a engine hoist going bad which left my hand smashed between an engine mount and a DT 530E.

I had a 3/4 GMC come within one running board of falling 6 feet onto me at work. I've had numerous close calls at home, all caused by stupidity. But, I will never go under a car without a stand under it.

Right, no Americans ever do this. The guy was an idiot, but his idiocy wasn't caused by his citizenship, thanks.

yeah...

i kinda chose the wording simply because he was canadian, I wasn't trying to imply that every canadian is up for a darwin award like this guy was.

i have little sympathy for him specifically for being A: dumb enough to work under a vehicle without at least jackstands, and B: dumb enough to work by himself, without taking the proper precautions. i work under cars alone a lot, or with high voltage electricity, or with heavy equipment, or some other dangerous situation... but my cell is always within reach, or someone is within earshot to come running if something bad happens and they hear a crash/explosion/me yelling in pain.

As a general principle for continuing to breathe, I dont even stick my head under a car up on a jack without a jackstand in my hand sliding under the car in front of my head. same thing for going under a vehicle lift until i make sure the locks are engaged and the car is secure.

feel bad for his family though. especially if he had a wife/kids.

there ought to be a law:

that cops can arrest you for not having stands / rims / blocking under your car while its in the air.

im a big fan of having a set of rims under the wheels that are off the ground. as it keeps the car up AND keeps it from rolling back.

Ive had to reef on stuff before that caused jack stands to lift a leg ..... very scary. i also know how easy it is for even a good jack to twist into a pretzel.

No. I certainly have never done it. Bet a lot of the people here have not either. As was noted above, one must feel very sorry for the family and friends, but it was a seriously stupid thing to do and sometimes doing really stupid things has consequences.
