Hey folks, I am going to replace the axles in the SHO and have determined that the center support bearing is bad. Does the center support bearing on the passenger side axle need to be pressed off or does it just slip off? If anyone has done this before any info would be appreciated. Also for those that have that annoying clunk in the front end and you have not been able to diagnose it try the center support bearing. Mine is bad enough that there is play in the bearing when you shake the axle. Thanks for any info you can provide!

I have never seen a center support bearing go bad, but they aren't hard to seperate. I think I knocked mine loose with a Brass mallet and prybar.

It`s called the Input Shaft Bearing.I found last year that the bearing has become obsolete. The Ford dealers don`t show any in stock anywhere in the country. With the help of Nick Chrimes,i found 4 left in the country. After a call to all 4 dealers, only one actually had it left, and i bought it.There may not be any left to be bought. What happens is the bearing starts to bind slightly, and it rips the rubber allowing it to spin freely in the housing. The shaft will pull out of the tranny, and the car will not move under power. As Marcus said though,if you find out,it comes out easily with a mallet.I can get you a part # for it Monday morning if you want.E mail me if so.

It just slips right off, at least it did for me when I replaced the passenger outer CV joint last winter. BTW, I highly recommend Raxles for new outer CV joints and boot kits. He never seems to have cores for any of the cars I have so I just get the outer joints from him and rebuild them myself. I wouldn't trust a parts store or even dealer rebuilt halfshaft anymore.

But you can't beat the lifetime warranty on axles from Autozone.

If you have them rebuild the axle for you, Raxles' axles have a lifetime warranty too. The difference is the raxles part won't need replacing. They use new outer joints and Amsoil grease (when I just buy new joints I use Redline CV-2). Autozone, Kragen, dealer rebuilt, wherever else they just use reground (if that) joints which won't hold up because the case hardening has been ground through and the cheapest, crapiest grease they can get
