I have an '93 3.2 with the an AX4S that is exhibiting issues associated with a cracked FWD Clutch piston. I have the opportunity to purchase a used 2002 AX4N. I have read that the AX4N is a better alternative. Can I swap in a 2002 AX4N? Will it fit? Is it compatible with the '93s electronics?

1999 Ax4S

Hawkeye18, thanks for the fast reply. One more question -what about installing an AX4s from a 1999 Windstar.

You would need to stick to the SHO ATX. The 94-95 SHO ATX is slightly better.

Is there a big difference? We enjoy this car, but it is never going to see the track.

I have put a windstar AX4S in the SHO. However, it was a 95 as well, so all the connectors were the same. The only serious difference is ratios/final drive, and a few other weaker components. I couldn't find a good SHO AX4S at the time and had to get the car back on the road.

The 2002 and 99 Trans will bolt up, but will be electronically incompatible.

Small stuff that extends the life. If you have the transmission rebuilt these can be included. You do have to watch for the spline count.

the Windstar trans w/ the 3.98 final drive ratio will result in the torque converter never locking up and the pcm thinking that the trans is slipping. the only solution is to get a tune that accounts for the ratio difference, if that is unlocked in the tuner software.

Fyi, I wasn't recommending doing it, I was just implying I did it in a pinch, and it got me by for a while.

Gentlemen I really appreciate the information. I was unaware of the subtleties of this ATX. Thanks for the answers, you all likely saved me considerable hassle, wasted time and wasted cash.As usual this forum proves its worth again!
