alright so if i do end up getting this 93 atx sho, i dont think i'd be able to do the mtx swap into it, probly if i had my mechanic look at it he could probly but until that day comes, what kind of upgrades can you add to the atx to make it more bullet proof? and how essential is a mtx to do a mid to low 14 sec 1/4 mile? i know that mtx blows away atx (my current car is mtx) but yeah if that's not an option for me than what can i do?

A built ATX will do better in the 1/4 than an MTX. Why? Low end torque. The MTX is much better suited for road coarses. The cost of bulletproofing your trans will be ~2400-3000 depending where you go.

maybe in the 1/8th, but I'm sure if you averaged the mtx quarter times compared to atx quarter times on the board, you will see Mtx's have a lower quarter times.

Best time on my modded atx was a 15.31....

my ATX vs Hunter's MTX...a miserable 15.31 vs 14.87. ouch

Either way they're within a few tenths if anything. If you want the manual just because its faster its not muchg to notice. I've had 2 manuals and 1 atx. For performance mods on my auto i have a y pipe and exhaust. It ran 15.1@91 with 17" wheels on it. Not that slow, mind you it has 165k on it. My 89 was a freak and ran 14.72 at 2 tracks it olny had a y pipe. I could easily get it off the line better with consistant 2.2 60' times all day every day on 215/60/15 fleetfarm tires. My other manual was slower than my atx. It ran [email protected] but then again it was a 40degree day and with a 20 mph tail wind. They're all about equal. The mtx's are a lot more fun but the atx has kept me out of a lot of trouble.

One more thing. I raced Traxter with his 91 and was sleeping at the light and reeled him in by 2nd gear. It was a clear victory for me and depends on the driver to pull off those 14 second times in stock trim. The mtxs should be better off the line due to there better gear ratio, but hooking up is something to work on. It's hard but the atx's are fun too. Give em a chance

yeah Im a transmission mechanic....... let me get my 2 cents in on this cause I was once pondering doing this to my ATX.

It is a lot of work, even for someone with the right tools and experience it still takes time and energy. It is actually a lot more then just putting a 5 speed in there... and I don't mean other things like pedals, clutch, shifter etc... I mean harness, subframe, mounts, and the accessories... that is a lot of work and far beyond average for a auto to manual swap for MOST cars that came with a 5 speed option from the factory.

Soooooo what to do?
I mean even my transmission is slipping in 2nd, and I felt it slip in 3rd a couple times the other night when I shoulda been in 2nd winding that out but I just stayed in 3rd out of the powerband and gearing but still on the power.....
I'm just going to rebuild mine, I've never seen a SHO transmission nor know a lot about the differences... and I hear they have some different parts inside so it will be entertaining. I've never pulled a SHO tranny out either....I've done Vulcan's and 3.8's but they are all different to some regards,

so Im going to rebuild this one in a couple months hopefully, keep posted if I do any improvements to it....

I'm just going to find a nice clean body MTX SHO one day, I don't care what else is messed up on it... and build a highly modified SHO, I'm just going to keep my ATX as a DD, it is fun... I love to drive 5 speeds too and I still enjoy this car. **** cruise around 30mph in 2nd gear then hit it.... its nice when it downshifts into 1st quickly and instantly pulls great....... **** thats probably my greatest fun doing that, atleast the speeds are slower and not 120. let me just throw a knock on wood in here.... FHP doesn't like when 120 shows up on their radar screen.......

I haven't run mine yet tho

Not going to until I get my trans redone. I just hit 172,500 coming home today.

the MTX will and IS faster because of the HORRIBLE gearing on the ATX, 47 first 85 in secons 140 in 3rd. thats why the manuals trap faster and run lower times. Then there is the 100lb difference in the trans itself. Once your over the weight then you have weight ballance the ATX engine is 3-4 inches forward from where the MTX sits so the MTX is faster and handles better. Mind you I drive a ATX but i have driven and raced autoX in both a MTX and ATX... but yes the ATX will launch more consistantly every time.

with enough power, I don't think the ATX gearing will be so bad because it will wind out rather easily....

what kind of power are you looking for from a TURBO sho? 400 or so?

The MTX is faster than the ATX when stock, but if you get a built ATX tranny, which you will most likely need if you want to get any reliability out of it, you could beat some of the MTX's out there, depending on how fast the driver is shifting. MTX's and ATX's each have their own performance pluses, but for me, the MTX is just more fun to drive:cool:
