ATX fluid

Well since the car is still sitting and my mity vac came in I decided to try it out. So far I am happy!

Right now its got about 5 liters out. I have yet to convert that to quarts but I am looking for the total capacity of the system so I know when I have gotten the system emptied.

I plan to drop the pan and do the filter too, an advance auto filter kit, but wanted to go ahead and get the fluid out.

I have not decided on the stock Ford fluid or mobil one Mercon III yet. I have like 8 quarts of the ford stuff and I doubt they will take it back so....

The Mobil one is pretty $$$ too if I recall, like 30-40 bucks a case of 8?

I want to get it out of the tranny cooler too and I am not sure if this thing will suck it out or not. I have the tube running down via the dip stick right now.

I ran a search and got some fluid type threads but nothing that really seemed to say the quantity.

I did my brothers 94Atx by removing one of the cooler lines and cranked up the engine to pump out oil in the torque converter, plus removing the pan.
then I ditched all the original lines from the transmission to the cooler and
threw that whole pos leak waiting to happen in the nearest garbage can.
I spent about $50 and bought some #6 aeroquip pushlok hose and two
#6 pushlok fittings one str8 and one 90* fitting.
plus two more radiused #6 fittings that went into the transmission,
and hooked that up to the factory cooler, real simple setup, no more overtaxing the factory cooling system with extra heat.
the factory cooler is a good unit.

the oil you have should last about 20k but no more than that
that transmission is a **** of a mission to get out and get rebuilt right, spend money in keeping it cool and the fluid serviced.

I use Amsoil ATF for all my vehicles and I have excellent results

Just checked it again and its got some left in the line but the auto shut off kicked in I think as its up to the 8 liter mark!!!! That should be 2.3 gallons of fluid I think.

So how much does this thing hold? I can empty it out into some jugs and pump it up again if I need to.

I want to get it all out then I can either stick with Ford stuff or go to mobil one or something but doing it every 20k should be easy.

I was thinking about ordering another cooler off summit and trying to run them both together? How would that work? Running normal hose and clamps should be ok with me. It gets some spirited driving and all but not every weekend at the track or anything like that. It will see the 1/4 a few times next spring to race some people I know.

you live in a colder climate than me Ill bet you will be fine with the factory cooler, if I remember right I used 10 quarts but thats with a new transmission that I rebuilt and bought a new torque converter.
normal hose isnt worth going cheap on, you need to use saftey hose with at least a 250 psi rating, and hose clamps will keep you awake at night, your transmission is worth it. would you buy ur g/f a cheap engagement ring? I would but thats just me.

Well I am trying to determine the systems total capacity, convertor and all. Its morethen 10qts right?

I just emptied the unit I got just over 2 gallons out so far. This is also with the car still on ramps so once I roll it off those I might get some more out without even taking the pan off.

So whats the system capacity?

I believe that according to the Helms the capacity is 14 qts (don't have it handy at the moment).

We usually recommend 18 to 20 qts for a flush and filter change.

Since you're using an unconventional method to change the fluid, I'm not sure what the best approach would be for you. We typically flush the fluid, drop the pan and change the filter, and then refill with 5 qts, running it through the gears until the tranny is warmed up, and then topping off until it's about in the middle of the cross-hatches on the dipstick.

Ack, I am at work...does anyone know what 14 quarts equates to in liters of gallons?

I got just over 2 gallons out, about 8 liters.

I plan to drop the pan and do the filter as well! Then I will do the fluid again in another 15k miles or so and the next time after that do the filter again and so on.
