Anything I should know to make life easier while replacing this? Aside from the truly awesome SHOpheonixproject front 60K guide? Thanks (+)

lol, I asked for it and didn't even know I did. I was very excited when the Oreilly Clerk handed me a "National Federal Mogul" Seal.
I was thinking...WeddellSeal

LOL. SHO - now powered by seals!

I don't really have any tips on replacing the front main. When I built my engine, I had my oil pump cleaned by my machinist who installed the seal. I just slipped it over the crank and bolted the pump onto the block.

If I were doing it on the car, I'd use a block of a wood and a rubber mallet to tap it into place. Be careful when pulling the old seal out. Use a sharp instrument (such as a dental pick, not a piano or a saxophone) and try to gently dig into the rubber and pull it out. Avoid the outside edges of the seal so you don't nick the aluminum housing of the pump. Any nicks can lead to a leak.

thank you. I was thinking of heating a pick of some sork up with a lighter so maybe it would slide through the seal, then get her out with a pair of longnose pliers.

It has been my experience that most clarinets are sharp, or at least out of tune. Would a clarinet work? They are smaller than a saxophone.

LoL @ all of this thread...

Anyway.. what I did... get a really small drill bit, and pop a hole in the middle of the seal somewhere.. but becareful you dont want to drill thru the oil pump. But after that, I had a pick I stuck in the hole, and yanked it right out. You could probally use a small screwdriver to wedge in there and pop it out too. If you can, try to keep the old seal as round (not bent up) as possible. When you put your new one on, put the old seal backwards against the new one, and tap on the old seal with a small hammer and it'll fall right into place. Maybe put a little oil on it to help the new one get started. I did the same thing for the rear seal, saved the old one to tap the new one in place.

Have fun!

make sure to either use a OE Ford seal, or a National seal, do not use a Fel-Pro, as they have been known to leak after installation (it happened to me)

Fel-Pro does not make radial oil seals. They repackage seals made by National. Use only the OE Ford seal if you want to be assured of not having to do the job over again. They are not expensive!

I found a custom seal installer to be quite helpful... a particular size of PVC pipe coupler from the regular Home Depot bins fit nicely over the crank.

I use a small punch to put 1 or 2 holes in the old seal. Then I screw 2 machine/wood screws into the holes about 3 turns. Than it's just a matter of pulling on the screws with pliers.

Now you can use some carb cleaner to clean around the crank and oil pump where the old seal was removed.

Now it's time to install the new seal. I personally like to put a little fresh oil on the inside diameter of the new seal, and some Indian Head/RTV spread very thin on the outside diameter of the seal. Now I use the 60K install tool, and send her home.:thumb:
