Another valve adjustment question

Hi,
I have a '95 w/100k miles on it. Now that school is out I have a lot time on my hands. I have been calling dealerships and even called a known SHO machanic, and nobody wants to do the valve adjustment. I want to to it myself, but I have never done any work on a engine before . Also my parents are against it.

How important is the valve adjustment? What will happen if it is not done? Is it a difficult job? I think I can do it myself, I have a Chiltons, the valve gap procedure from sdpatt, and I will be ording the 60k video. So what you do guys think. I need some opinions to convince my dad. rant

With all thoes references, there's no reason NOT to do it yourself. It is not a hard procedure, just take your time.
I don't know how you're going to convince your parents about it, but there's not that many steps to removing stuff.
The intake comes off as a whole piece.
After that, it's just the valve covers.
Be careful not to snap the valve cover bolts when you put them back on.
Everything else is childs play. The valve adjustment itself is a bit time-consuming, but is by no means hard.
Label all the bags you put your bolts in, and you will be fine.
Belive me, it is not that hard at all.
And you will save yourself mad loot in labor costs.


If your valve adjustment is not done, after so long it will begin to wear the camshafts instead of the shims. I belive the adjustment is done more for the life of the cams than for power.

considering youve never done any engine work before you may get a little frustrated and it may take you longer than normal. but i think anyone can do it. try and find a friend whos good with this stuff or a forum member who lives nearby. good luck!

I did mine for the first time in December during my winter break. It was not complicated but I can totally understand intimidation, I would not have been nearly as comfortable as I was if I didn't have the 60k video. I am also fimilar with engines done head gaskets and engine swaps before so I don't know how much experience you have but if you have a wrench and the 60k video you should do fine. Just watch the video several times before starting the process, and trade in the crappy Chiltons and get a Helms, much better.
