Hey guys, I'm sure this is something that has been talked about before and a lot but I just wanted to get some of your inputs. I have actually being using Motul synthetic oil for my car and it has been excellent! I tried amsoil for the first time after setting up an account and I used their 5w-20 signature series (the one they say 25k miles which I would never do) Its been 5,600 miles so far and that oil is dark! I want to give the brand another chance so ill probably do another oil change very very soon. What has anyone who has used amsoil experience been? I am wondering if its the application of the sho, or the grade or something else maybe.

If you spend much time studying oils, you will learn several things fairly quickly:
1. All of the oils of today are dramatically better than oils of 20 years ago.
2. Almost any of the synthetic oils are excellent, and any of them will run 10k miles except for very severe duty.
3. The various brands of oils use different additive packages, and they do not always play well together, so one of the important rules is to pick one brand and stay with it. Then you don't have to worry about what the random combination of additives are doing to your seals.
4. You cannot learn anything about the condition of the oil by looking at it. If you want to know, take a sample and send it in to a place like Blackstone and have them analyze it. Trust them, that is what they do for a living - if they tell you at 20k that your Amsoil is still good, then it is.
5. I happen to be a fan of Mobil1, but there are plenty of other good brands of oil from which to choose if you don't like Exxon/Mobil for any reason. Castrol is another one that gets very high marks from the guys in the know.
6. You don't need to spend the $$$ that Amsoil costs to get a great oil.

I use amsoil and also use their gear **** in my Jeep ELSD diff's, great stuff. It is actually not any more expensive than other quality lubes when you register and get the discount. Oil turning color does not mean it is degraded. I also run the signature and change it at about 15k and agree with rubydlist, stick with one oil to maintain chemistry.

1. True
2. Highly disagree, I've seen people have too many issues by trusting their oils. And to me 10k is just too long.
3. True
4. True
5. To each is own, I personally did not like Mobil but it truly depends on the application
6. I have a commercial account with them and plus if I get the life out of each interval as I should then it is actually more cost effective.

Thanks for your input! lol

10k is not at all too long. I have data to prove it. You on the other hand just have your "feelings" that it is too long. Oil is a thing where you should trust science, not your gut.

Oil staying light in color is not necessarily good, and oil turning dark is not necessarily a bad sign.
If oil stays light for too long, it is an indication the detergent package may not be effective. There are as many opinions on oil as waves in the sea, but for what it's worth, you might be interested in this: https://540ratblog.wordpress.com/2013/06/20/motor-oil-wear-test-ranking/

Well through out the years I have come to believe that engine oil is designed to turn dark when the oil is cold. Everybody say's to check oil level when the oil is cold and in a very short time it will turn dark. Well here is what I do and it will change your mind about engine oil color. "Check engine oil level when the oil is cold and check engine oil color when the oil is hot" You will see that the oil color when hot even at 10000 miles is clear enough to read the writing on the dip stick.

This is the standard way to check engine oil, not at ambient.
"Turn the engine off and wait 15 minutes for the oil to drain into the oil pan."
