2011 SHO Engine Replace

I'm looking for some advice. I had some catastrophic engine failure due to overheating. Coolant in the oil was the diagnosis. Thank God I purchased the extended warranty as I just turned 80,000 miles. Ford is covering everything with only a $100 deductible. Ford has been nothing but the best for any and all issues that I've had. First was the transmission issue. I believe the problem was something to do with the AWD. 3 months in shop, no issues since. Now, car overheats 1 minute from my house. Immediately towed to dealer. The need to replace the entire engine and turbos. Anything I should know or look out for after its done? How should the warranty cover this new engine? I appreciate your opinions.

even without your extended warranty, the new engine will have its own warranty for 1 year, iirc. Once it is installed, it should be covered by the extended warranty you purchased.

My guess is not but hopefully they put a better head gasket in this time. I remember having serious difficulty with my dealer when a crankshaft bearing failed. I repeatedly asked them to replace the oil pump which the warranty company said no. I told them I would pay for a pump but the dealer this time wouldn't cut me any break on price they wanted to charge me full retail price plus install on a pump that they weren't paying for due to warranty. I paid my $100 deductible and sold the 93 Taurus the next day, didn't feel comfortable with the oil pump since that was failing and couldn't afford the $750. Rat bastard dealer and never brought anything from them again.

IDK what will be involved in your engine repair but this just came out on the 9th:

Taurus, MKS, MKT And Flex - 3.5L GTDI Long Block Replacement Service Tips

3.5L GTDI replacement long block (6006) engines are shipped with the 2013-2014 cam sensors (6A257), crank sensor (6C315), crank sensor tone wheel (12A227) and coolant inlet tube (8A505). If you are installing a replacement long block engine into a 2010-2012 Taurus, MKS, MKT or Flex vehicle equipped with a 3.5L GTDI engine, the components listed above must be swapped over from the original engine to the replacement long block before the engine is installed into the vehicle. Failing to swap the cam sensors, crank sensor, crankshaft tone wheel and coolant inlet tube before the engine is installed will require the engine to be removed again to complete the repair.

I apologize for bringing up an old thread, I looked high and low for this answer, but I just suffered the same thing with coolant in the oil on my 2010 and I'm looking for a replacement engine.

Can I get confirmation that the listed sensors and coolant tube are all that need to be swapped over in order to drop in a 2013-2014 engine into my 2010 sho? Also, is there anything else required to swap the 2013-14 transmission and turbos as well?

The 2013-2014 engines are a dime a dozen and significantly cheaper than 2010-2012 so I appreciate all help.

I am also looking to determine if 2010-2012 can be swapped with a later year and also possibly out of an explorer or flex. A Ford reman my cost is around 3800 plus turbos. Mine had failure of the water pump under warranty which washed the bearings and caused 2 sets of turbos to be put on it before the customer gave up and left it. It should have had the engine replaced for the customer but i was not the tech who diagnosed it. I bought it for $300 from my work after it sat for a year and they got the title. Brought it home pulled off bank 2 turbo, turbine sitting in the catalyst. Hence the name OL' Smoky. Metal in oil feed filter to turbo. Engine oil system full of metal. If I keep it it's probably worth the 5000 to put in it as its worth between 7k-10k in decent shape.

Just adding up all the possible costs of all the tsbs. The main dollar ones are the ptu and a tsb for an issue with the trans case half. I'm going to look this thing over (check ptu fluid condition, ect). To see of there are any other high dollar items of need to be replaced before I decide on a reman or just install a used engine and flip it. Does need a windshield repl and the rear quarters straightend. Should be on the feasible side as I have free labor and reduced fomoco parts pricing. Would make a great daily if I can do it right. Tuxedo black, peps, brown suede interior package, moonroof. Hids. 85k miles.

So far looking in the workshop manual the engines seem the same for a 2010 sho vs 2013 explorer Sport. Intake vct only on both engines. I think later ones got ti-vct. Gonna run Part numbers for the explorer Tomorrow. The repl engine for the sho reman is au7z-6006-arm.

My understanding is there are two blocks - the fwd version and the rwd version. That suggests that you may be able to swap from Explorer or Flex as well as the cars.

Yeah I was able to determine that the rwd use a different bellhousing bolt pattern vs. The fwd version among the other differences. The explorers list a different part number for 2013 - 2014. The 2010-2011 sho list the same au7z-6006-arm. There seem to be more used explorer engines available vs sho. The problem would be to find an actual good one. Anyone have any leads on decent priced reman long blocks? I would avoid jasper. Every one we installed for a customer had some sort of machining issue which caused seal leaks and comebacks. Parts dept. Recommended eagle engines. Gonna give them a call. See what wholesale pricing is.

When you search on car part dot com for a 2010 Taurus SHO engine, it will display all applicable vehicles; however, it stops at 2012. I'm just hoping I only have to swap the cam sensors, crank sensor, crankshaft tone wheel and coolant inlet tube to make it work.

Also find out if they have requirements as to who installs the engine/transmission for the warranty to be valid. That is usually the dealbreaker.

Agreed SHOdded. I personally the ability to install it and get paid to do it again under warranty as I am a Ford tech. I have been using car-part as well. Did some research yesturday. As far as I determined they used the same part number long block. Aside from some di fuel system updates the 2013-2016 ones seem indentical with exception to the sensors as indicated. Just looked at the wsm, even the 16 still only uses the ivct. I may bite the bullet and get a later explorer one from a junkyard o a comparison. Theres a few 2013-2016 low milers around for nearly half of the cost of a 2010-2012. They waited until the second Gen to implement ti-vct. I replaced an second gen 3.5eb engine on a brand new 17 Raptor this summer that had a loose crank bolt from assembly, a few other dealers did too unfortunately. It had ti-vct along with many major differences.

Meant to say sa me part number short blocks not long blocks the new long blocks use a different number for each year. I'm only assuming that's to designate year in the part listing but unsure. They don't give us all the info on changes from model year to year. If they did it would make this easy. I'm sure it's documented somewhere.

Looks like I'm about to bite the bullet and pull the trigger on a 2016 Explorer Police package, engine, trans, turbos with 39k for $2500 shipped to the shop of my choosing. Any final thoughts everyone? 'Ol Smoky you've pretty much put my mind at ease but if you find something else out in addition to the sensors, let me know. I will let you guys know whenever I get the install going!

I will let you know if I find anything else out or run in to anything else. I just put a deposit on a 2016 explorer interceptor 3.5 eb with 4200 miles that includes turbos. Their asking total will be around 1700 all said and done. I checked the ptu fluid in mine and it looks like metallic and syrupy like all the others I have replaced over the years, im gonna change the fluid while its off during the engine swap. Luckily they recently came out with a ptu internal service kit for overhauling it if it's noisy. Im gonna add a drain plug to make fluid changes easier. I brought home a junk ptu from a 2016 explorer sport a buddy of mine swapped yesturday so I can take it apart and decide a good place for a drain plug. Maybe overhaul this one and swap it if mine turns out noisy. My rear end fluid looks fine but all the fluids are going to be changed anyway. I'm going to pick the engine up either Thursday or friday. I have a 2 post at home that it's sitting on at the moment so I'm gonna borrow the powertrain lift from work and do the swapping here that way if I run into an issue it's not tying up a rack at work. I will keep updating as I go. It might be a week or two before I start on it.

Just got home with the new engine. Drove 400 miles round trip to Wisconsin from Manteno, IL. looked it over pretty well. Its pretty much complete minus accessories. Turbos are clean and no wear. Spark plugs are original and with no wear. Inside the valve cover is spotless. The aluminum on the block is still shiny in spots. Came with the intake and throttle body and most of the cac tubes. Let the swapping begin!

Had a little time today to get the garage moved around to make room for working on the car. Made a bank 2 lifting bracket, i have one at work forgot to bring it home. Spent about an hour on the car. Got the subframe ready to drop out. Had to heat the ball joint nuts and front sub frame bolts and the rear sub-bracket bolts to the body. removed the harness from the donor engine. Had to stop to take the wife out to dinner. If I had my way I'd have had it ready to pull by 11pm. Tomorows another day. I'll continue with lower disassembly and pull the hood off and work on the top side disassembly.
