17" tire opinions

Well these pics are for jthod.

I have many wheels in my collection and my Gen1 has worn them all. Still I use the 235/45/17 without hesitation. The driver side wheel well needs trimming for sure. My current wheel/tire combo is 18X8 with 235/40 rubber.

The 225-50-17 is a perfect combo for a 7 inch wheel. The best tire for the money right now is the michelin pilot sport a/s tire rack has on sale right now. They are typically over 200 bucks a piece. I ran them on one of my vettes and also on bandito. Best tires I have ever touched for a street car.

at least a VR rating is needed for a SHO as they came from the factory with VR's. I like the Bridgestone RE-101 in 235 45 17.

Nope, the tires actually overhang the bead a little. They look proper on a 7" wheel (at least the Kuhmo's do). 235/45 looks proper on an 8" wheel. :thumb:

personally I'd run a 225 45 17 but 50 series don't look too bad either, I just like shorter/stiffer sidewalls.... makes a big difference

ya'll are crazy running 225's on a 7" rim,what a waist.
ive got some kinda 235/45/17 Nitto tires on my PR wheels and it looks perfect,flat with the front of the wheel.

Ditto. I would go with a 235/45/17 tire, but 225 is definitely the best size for a 7" wheel. do NOT go with a 245, that is far too wide.

Looks like you're looking at all-seasons as well, dunno why so many people are recommending 3 seasons tires to you...

Oh, back up, they're 8" wide. :nut: I thought all the M-11's were 7", but after doing some more reading, and actually reading the stamping on the wheels, they are 8".

They have pretty well worn 245/45-17's on them, and I threw them on for a test fit tonight. As I thought, they look completly badass.

Holy wide tires batman!

The rear fenders will obviously need to be cut and rolled. There's about 6mm of room between the inside lip of the rim, and the strut tube. The tires have only about a 2mm overhang closer to the tube, so that should be good.

I'm having my dad take one in tomarrow to get a quote on some curb rash repair, and possibly fill in the logo on the lip that hold the plastic piece. Probably not going to like the powdercoating oven:naughty:

I'm calling them tomarrow to, to see the price on powdercoating them black.

I need to find two center caps as well. I think I'll fill the lettering and get some Yamaha emblem gel dome stickers for them :naughty:

I think I'll probably end up going with the 245/45's. There seems to be a little better choice that the 235/45's. Plus, why not go just a little bit wider?!?!

Man those wheels would have looked good on my car!

Looks good and glad your upgrading the wheels at least. Weaves destroy the Gen I IMHO.

brakes will come, but I have new pads and turned rotors, so they will be good for mow, until I get everything together for the suspension. I'd rather just do everything at once. Eibachs/Monroes, Gen 3 Brakes, new endlinks and bushings, probably ALSFB's.

Good luck cutting the fender lips to clear the 245's. Careful you do not cut through the pinch welds or the rear quarter panels will lose its integrity.
The Driver side will need the most work. Also the plastic screw&retainer in the body cladding will need to be redrilled and remounted.

We had the roof done last week, and I've been too lazy.

As for cutting the fenders, I may cut, and re-weld the pinches. The plastic cladding shouldn't be too bad to deal with.


I called the PC place today, only $42 per wheel if I bead blast myself. Alloy wheel repair for the curb rash is $85...:nut:

Well, the fenders are rolled. I just need to trim the plastic and put it back on. I've been rollin' without half of my rockerpanels :laugh_ti:

I used the old baseball bat method with NebraskaSHO's help. Worked out pretty well, I need to do some sealing on the inside to prevent rust. We used a heat gun on the paint, and had no problems with the paint.

I think I'm going with the rattle cans for now, maybe PC them down the road.

I've got an oder ready for the suspension tires, and after that tires.

call me crazy, but I love the bfgoodrich tires especially like the traction t/a's. I replaced a set of yokohama avs's on my 88 gt mustang for those, bfg's, and man, the car handled fantastic, quiet, predictable, and low wear on the tread. I also ran different bfg's on my jp cherokee, and my cj7 for multiple years with alot of use and abuse and had minimal tread wear. Very pleased with bfg's products...

yeah if u got an 8" wheel defintely go for the 245's!

also those traction T/A's aren't that great.... well in this case they were better then the Yokohama's, but thats like saying Roseanne Barr is hotter then a fat Oprah, although maybe true, your still not getting anywhere

im not a fan of BF Goodrich in general, but the G-Force Sport is an OKAY tire for its price, and if you up the price, the KDW2 is a nice tire, with excellent traction in the rain....

Bridestones here; 235/45/17 RE101; much better than the Yokahama ES100 that wore out very quickly. Far better tire than a Traction TA and rated higher than GYear GSD's
