My Grandpa…
What began as a somewhat routine surgery in 2009 that was botched has ended a great life. My grandpa never truly recovered..
That original surgery necessitated a follow-up surgery in June. The original surgery is the reason he passed early this morning in Hospice Care within a hospital setting. To say we are sad is an understatement.
This guy is tough. He was removed from medicine and life support 14 days ago, and didn’t have food or water for 16 days. Yet he was strong and survived, able to speak in response to a couple of questions and acknowledge we were there when I was at the hospital with him yesterday. I've spent a lot of time in the hospital lately...
It’s heartbreaking…. To see him like that and for him to say he wasn’t in any pain was difficult to imagine. He was the most positive person I’ve ever known! I will never forget him, his great stories, or the great times we had. Every time I reach in my pocket for a $20 dollar bill I will think of him... Every month for as long as I can remember, him and my grandma would give all of the grandchildren a $20 bill that they called a “flying $20”.
I know I’m lucky to have had my grandparents around at my age. I’m also truly blessed to have the great family and extended family I have! This morning at the hospital seeing everyone there supporting each other in this difficult time was amazing!
My mom, my grandma, and all other family members have been remarkable regarding their devotion to my grandpa. The care he received from the hospital was excellent; the care from my mom and others has been exceptional. Someone from the family was always there – night and day – to ensure my grandpa was not alone.
I spent about 20 minutes alone with him a yesterday; no one else in the room. I held his hand and told him I loved him. I told him we hated to see him like that and wished he could come home. I told him how strong he was and that it was time to go to a better place where he would be free of pain and back in the lives of other relatives that have passed. I laughed, I cried, and spoke of good times we shared.
Today ended a fabulous life. My grandpa was born and raised in Northern Ireland, and came to the USA as a teenager who had lost his parents. He worked hard for the “Ford Motorcar Company” (as he often referred to it) for 44 years and loved every minute of it. He did not want to retire, and has “Blue Blood” in his veins.
He was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, neighbor and friend. Everyone who has met him has said what a wonderful, optimistic, generous, friendly, gentle, and yes, pokey, person he is. (Even my grandma made a joke saying, “He’s been slow for a long time, what makes you think he’s going to go quickly”). He’s also irreplaceable, and it has been my privilege to know and love him for 31 years.
I love you Grandpa!!!!!
You were an amazing person and will be truly missed!!!!!
