maybe i dont know how to search the forum effectively, but

when i go to the parts store to get new rotors, calipers and what not, do i tell them i have a 96 Taurus and not a 93 to get the correct brake parts?

also im still confused about the difference between the spindles/knuckles on the 94+ models and what to look for. is it that the caliper has a removable bracket?

and will gen 3 knuckles work? cause if its a 96 conversion wont the knuckles from that era of vehicle work as well?

im going to the junkyard later this afternoon, any insight would be appreciated

Yep, tell them its for a 96 TAURUS SHO.

You need the knuckles from any 94 or 95 Taurus or Sable w/ ABS. 96+ knuckles will not work.

I'd have new bearings pressed into the junkyard knuckles, BTW.

Have you considered the 13" Cobra brakes? Or the Cobra calipers on the 11.6" rotors?

i dont think i have enough money for the 13s as much as i would love the look and power of them. i need new front calipers, rotors, and pads (and fluid at that) . so the 11.6 upgrade is what im gonna start with, unless someone can sell me everything needed for a cobra setup for ~250 (haha)

thanks for clearing up the knuckle question.

the knuckles are different.

you will need knuckles off of any type of 1994-1995 Taurus/Sable

you will need calipers off of a 94 SHO

you will need caliper brackets off of a 96-99 SHO or 2001+ Taurus/Sable... these have FN74 stamped onto the brackets, if it doesn't plainly say that on them, they are wrong. Also take the caliper bracket bolts as they are different. Caliper bolts are need too.....

you will need rotors off of a 96-99 SHO or 2001+ Taurus/Sable

you will need pads for a 96-99 SHO

brake lines should work without change

the reason you need the 94-95 knuckles are, those are the only year knuckles that bolt up to the gen1/2 style suspension pieces, and will fit those caliper brackets. The 93 and 94 knuckles vary by the caliper bracket holes...

also you cannot buy the correct caliper brackets, you have to find the right ones used......... some stores say they have them, but they are listed wrong. Trust me I whent through 3 different stores, they all bolt up but hit the rotor.......

-rotors, buying new

I think in 1994 they changed the calipers............

you can use a 96-99 SHO caliper, but I think its the same as a 94 SHO one.... so I just say 94+ SHO

you got the right brackets if they say FN74 on them....... those are the hard things to get.............

I used 99 SHO Performance Friction Cermic pads....... they are ok....... some people also like Carbotech pads, they are more money tho......... I liked the upgrade a lot for all stock stuff..... it stops a lot better then the brakes on my 89........ noticeable difference

If you're buying anything at AutoZone, ask for 1997 Taurus SHO parts, as their listing for the 1996 pads is incorrect (they only list 601s for the '96, versus 601s and 598s for the '97 - you want the latter). Advance Auto carries CarDone calipers, which have always been Ford OEM remanufactures.

You need caliper bracket bolts for the 1994-95 calipers. The bolts for the 96-and-up bracket is longer, as the front spindle/knuckle is different. The correct caliper bracket bolt is an M12 x 1.75 x 31.0mm (last number is the length).

If you need either the CarDone or Ford OEM part numbers, let me know.

can anyone recomend a good online place to get brake pads/rotors or do you think i would be able to tell the difference between drilled slotted rotors vs stock, and parts store pads vs some of the ones offered online as higher performance

thanks again

Get the rotors from a local parts store, since they're heavy and shipping won't be cheap. Get regular OEM replacement rotors, not slotted.

As for pads, Pepboys sells Hawk pads and possibly the EBC brand as well. Hawk HPS or EBC Greenstuff should be fine for what you're looking for. If you want a more aggressive pad, go with HP+ or Redstuff, just expect a lot more dust and lots of squeaking.

If you don't want to spend the $$$ on those brands(starting around $100) any carbon-metallic pad should work well enough.

I bet you could do cobras for a little more than $250us. I found the calipers for $180us, and rotors can be had cheap. I have no idea what JY knuckles are worth...

I got my 99 SHO rotors locally for 24 bucks from Discount Auto Parts.......

I would buy them through a store so you don't pay shipping, plus if they are wrong its easy to return....... yaknow

goto any parts store and buy the cheapest new rotors you can find, they WILL work! any pads will work, I like ceramics or the PFC... Performance Friction Cermaics? its a brand that Autozone sells........

personally with PFC pads, I don't think u will be able to notice any difference between 25 dollar rotors and 150 dollar rotor that is slotted and brembo brand or such......... others will argue that but like I say, the only big difference u will notice is apperance... if thats worth an extra 125 big ones... then thats on you.........

and if your going to be so frugal with brake performance, go with cobra calipers

I like the stock 99 SHO cause its so much better then the stock Gen1/gen2 sho brakes, but its CHEAP to maintain, and parts are easier to find.... thats my main reason

for this time around i am going with basic stock rotors, 99 SHO calipers and prob ceramic pads from either Napa or autozone. the calipers are expensive cause i cant get my core charge back cause they are the wrong ones. but anyways, then maybe next year i will get cooler looking rotors and see how they perform but for now looking forward to not having the pedal to the floor during auto x events.

ill post pics when i am done for you all. i got one knuckle swaped last night. that is not enjoyable.

thanks for all the help and i look forward to stopping.
