    Hydrocarbon~California emissions

The SPOUT (spark output) plug removal will aid in NOx output reduction, but I don't recall it helping the HC numbers. The unburned HC number is a sign of incomplete combustion and is benefited by a tune up as found by the OP. The non-California 3.0L engine did not come with EGR, which was added...

Looking for SHO Mechanic in Philadelphia

A misfire without a check engine light is almost always due to the secondary ignition: plugs or plug wires. Oil in the plug wells can also contribute to a misfire.

On the track at 433,000 miles

The SHO Convention provided the opportunity to get the SHO back on the road race track and wear out the last bit of rubber off the R-compound tires and farther wear the track pads. The site was Eagles Canyon Raceway in north Texas on July 30 and the track was reserved for the SHO folks, which...

2 alternators in under a year. Crappy rebuilding or wiring problems with the car?

The original on my SHO went 252,000 miles. Since then, I am on the ninth rebuild. Some have lasted only a few days. The country in which they are rebuilt has had a direct correlation on the life of the part. Last one was rebuilt in USA and has been going for two years. Lifetime warranties are...

    harmonic balancer questions???

The device on our SHO engines is actually a dampner rather than a balancer. As long as the chipped part is a small portion of the belt guide, you should be fine on balance. There are six ribs keeping the belt on the dampner. To reinstall the dampner in the future, get a quality strap wrench...

    bucking/surging while cruising

If no telltale codes, it could be a secondary ignition fault such as leaking plug wires or short to ground at the plug. I had a similar condition that was caused by an arc path down the plug insulator. It left a black trail on the white insulator.

    Question about replacing rod bearings

I replaced the rod bearings twice on mine for preventative maintenance and checked the clearances with Plastigage on the first few bearings changed, only to find them in spec. I was more concerned about the repeated r&r of the caps and the stretching of the studs. I passed on checking the...

    bucking/surging while cruising

The codes may point to other possibilities such as the CID sensor, which can cause a bucking behavior. As said before, start with the codes.

    MTX shift lever

This is the second time this has happened on my car. The black phenolc pivot joint bonded to the shifter handle has cracked and now allows the shifter to rotate in my hand. I am looking for the threaded shaft that incudes the black plastic 4-bolt pivot flange that bolts to the top of the shifter...

    Stiff brakes, no stop

Ditto. I installed 3 master cylinders one weekend before I got a working version.

Remove and Torque crank bolt, finally an easy method.

I have never found a crankshaft damper to slip on its rubber ring when doing this task. If the outer ring does slip, the damper was soon to fail and needed to be replaced anyway. The damper is much easier to swap that a piston. These parts are actually crankshaft dampers and not harmonic...

Remove and Torque crank bolt, finally an easy method.

A stout strap wrench on the damper works pretty good with no risk to any other parts or loosening the carbon crust on the piston top. I can easily get the required 113-126 lb-ft (or more) on the damper bolt.

brake pedal to the floor off and on

After reviewing the Chilton's manual's description of the ABS system functionality, I was convinced that the only mechanism of failure was leakage past the master cylinder seals. The ABS hydraulic control unit (HCU) has solenoid valves that are normally open and are actuated to the closed...

brake pedal to the floor off and on

To make it even more probable that the newly installed master cylinder is faulty, it was a remanufactured part that may have been "on the shelf" for an undeterimined length of time. It does have a lifetime warranty and I now will be developing experience in the master cylinder replacement...

brake pedal to the floor off and on

Engine off - pedal to the floor Doing more testing, I find that with the engine off, I can push the brake pedal to the floor on occasion. The pedal is usually hard when pressed, but after about 30-50 pushes, it will sink quite easily to the floor for 1-3 presses and then be hard again. What...

brake pedal to the floor off and on

RacerX, I had found a simliar post of yours in a search this morning and plan to perform a detailed inspection of the brakes to check for the items you mentioned. I will also check the anti-rattle springs. The front brakes are the '96 upgrade and the calipers are the second set of remanned units...

brake pedal to the floor off and on

There have never been any leaks in the brake system. This happened shortly after replacing the front calipers and bleeding the system with full travel of the brake pedal to the floor. I recall one or two possible instances of this condition in the previous years since installing the '96 uprgade...

brake pedal to the floor off and on

I will add my case to this topic since it was through this discussion that I determined my master cylinder was also at fault for the identical symptoms. I replaced the the master cylinder (MC) with the remanufactured Fenco M2613 from AutoZone. The new part is the NM2613, with the "N" statnding...

    ABS sensor removal without damage

I am so thankful I do not live in the rust belt. I cannot imagine having to deal with the component corrosion you guys are challenged with.

    half throttle woes

Another possibility of poor performance at high exhaust flows is a blocked exhaust system. In the SHO's case, this would likely be due to one or more failed catalytic converters. Tap on the cats with a wooden broomstick to check for the death rattle of broken ceramic internals.
