The spring that retracts the handle broke. Same thing happened to mine. Opened the door and I heard it break. Boy, was I relieved when the handle still worked and I found a piece of the spring.
I never fixed it though. Didn't feel like ripping another door panel off. Car died a month later...

The key doesn't work in the passenger door because it's worn out. The driver's door and ignition locks work because they wear out as the key does.

Rust free means no rust on the body, and nothing more than surface rust on the frame and suspension.
Now, "minor rust" is a tough one. I see ads proclaiming "minor" or "little" rust to be anything that you can't fit more than three fingers through.
