ATX Timing belt tensioner tear-down (pics soon)

Just got a rebuilt from NESHO.COM late yesterday. Thanks Kirk! Had everything back together before the rain came. Initial reaction: it is so nice not to hear that below 2K noise anymore. Regretably, I don't have a video camera, as I was running the engine without accessory drive or TB belt...

    Another rod bearing question

You are right!!! I took the accessory drive belts and pulleys, and the upper and middle timing belt covers off today, started it up, and can see the tensioner hammering against the block. The pulley itself appears to be good. I'm not sure exactly whats wrong yet, and have posted a question...

you are right on both counts. now if i could only get rid of that code 332 and pass pa emission...

marbles in my engine!! - SOUND ADDED

IMO, definately not normal. Low hammering sound immediately after startup, and in the background. Sounds like the noise I'm trying to identify in my car. With a stethescope, sounds like #1 cyl in the source, and I suspect rod bearings. If I get time over the weekend, I'm going to look for a...

    timing chain tensioner noise?

I just went through this on my '94 ATX, 161K. I had convinced myself that the rear cylinder bank was the culprit, so took a chance on a used set of heads on eBay, just to get the tensioners. This cost me $75, plus another $75for shipping. Was unable to find any new parts. Based solely on what...

    Another rod bearing question

I had the timing belt and tensioner off last month, thinking I had crank cancer. Did not. Seemed to be OK. Had to put the tensioner in a vise to retract the piston, was tight. Tensioner pulley bearing smooth, no sign of immenent failure. Grandpa to grandpa, what makes you think that?

    Another rod bearing question

It will take me more than 3 hours just to get the car jacked up, and clean off 15 years of engine crud from leaky gaskets and seals. Regretfully, I've gotten older, slower, have to take frequent breaks, and can't always find the tools that are right in front of me. But I still like working...

    Another rod bearing question

I thought about plastigage, but tend to agree with you. Without pulling the engine and crank, essentially to do a full rebuild, the measurement is useless. If the journal is in good condition and won't damage a replacement bearing, that's as good as it gets IMO. Knowing the exact journal...

    Another rod bearing question

I had the top apart in May, thinking I had bad cam chain tensioners. I also bought a set of heads on eBay just to get the tensioners before beginning that project. But the cams were perfect, no pitting at all, not like the cam photos posted somewhere here on the forum. And there was nothing...

    Another rod bearing question

Rudydist, I began this "repair" thinking I had the dreaded crank cancer, and bought a used crank pulley sprocket from you. After getting it apart, I found that was not the case, crank bolt was tightly torqued, and no wear on the slot, key, or sprocket. But I put yours on, because it was cleaner...

    Another rod bearing question

Thanks for taking the time to post these great photos, as they will be very helpful if I decide to drop the pan and take a look. But I fear the worst, and might check out one of those used engines currently up on eBay. So far, no one there can confirm the claimed mileage, so they may not be any...

    Another rod bearing question

I've been reading through the forum posts related to rod bearing questions, but can't find any followup posts to see if the suggested fixes solved the problem or not. And many ultimately drift off topic, which makes for interesting reading and some interesting gems of knowledge. My '94 ATX...
