Oil smoke from right rear under hood when cats are hot

Hello all, I have had this issue for 6 months now and I want to fix it asap,slow leak (motor oil), there is smoke coming from under my hood pass side after the 94 ATX is warmed up. Expecially after the oil is changed and FULL, I dont believe it is a oil sending unit because I read that it is located near the master cylinder side of the engine and it really wont drip on the cats ,exhaust etc. When I look with my flash lite there is oil saruration on the top of the power steering pump behind the belt! It is not steering fluid because it is all ways full. Could the leak be valve seals ..the valve covers were replaced 2 yrs ago by my mechanic. is there any pictures of the valve seals fix? Not sure but what do you suggest.

Cam seals. A search should give you more info.

If that's leaking, might as well replace the crank seal, timing belt, CPS, valve cover gaskets, etc.

cams seals as said above could be the most likely cause, but i have also found that it could be

1: Power steering pump leaking (less likely but possible. Pray it isnt because cam seals are easy to replace, a PS pump is not).
2: A very messy and torn cv boot flinging grease on that cat

Okay, I do have this problem, and it's not oil at all.. It is in fact your power steering fluid... mine is leaking right at the pump pulley shaft or some shit... mine drips down on the cat on the pass side but it is intermittent and only when I havn;t driven her for awhile...

stinks to **** but my power steering reservoir never shows anything less, but I think that that crap just smokes alot after being put on the hot parts...

Mine is leaking, my fluid in the res even smells old and worn/burnt.... mine needs alot of work... was wondering how much of a pain it is to replace that and what is all involved....:woohoo:

Alsom, all my seals were replaced and none are leaking.

just to chime in on the "if power steering leak". if power steering fluid is leaking onto the cats, the fluid will catch fire. power steering fluid is pretty flammable.


story about power steering fluid catching fire (optional read):
my high pressure power steering hose had a leak and i took it to one mechanic to look at. while they were looking at it, they turned the hose around so the split in the hose ended up facing down. when i had gotten home (3 miles) from the mechanic, i looked in my side mirror and all i saw was white smoke coming out of the back. i stopped halfway into my driveway, turned off the car, popped the hood, flames were coming up, ran and grabbed the hose, put out the fire, saved the sho ;p

Just to add --- it is more than likely the rear cam seal, which is inside the CID housing. If you remove the CID and there is a little oil in the bottom of the housing, you have found it. No need to change the front two seals, unless you are going to go ahead and make it a full front 60K. The front two seals require removal of the timing belt...a lot more work.

When you put the new seal in, be absolutely sure to apply a thin coat of RTV around the outer perimeter for rubber coated (OEM seal) or anerobic sealant for aftermarket metal jacket seal...this per FSM. They often leak around the outside if sealant is not used between the seal jacket and the engine.
