slipping tranny questions torque converter not locking up?

i have a 95 atx with 145k on it i bought it about 8 months ago about 10 months ago the tranny was replaced with a used unit with 75k on it. about 2 months ago it started not catching first gear from a stop. but only when the fluid was hot. in the winter i never had any problems but there was a 1-2 clunk along with a extra long 2-1 shift. i ended up deciding that the tranny was shot and going for another white 95 atx i found with 140k on it with a rebuilt tranny 10-20k ago it sat for a while so it needs some freshining up along with a pass door. for some reason or another i ended up reading up a little on torque converters after hearing about them not locking up.....it got me thinking about my old SHO could the tranny have been fine in my old sho with a bad tq converter and tps?

i've had plenty of experience with sho atx trannys and it sounds like your old trannies were still perfect, the problem is there a few things like the vss sensor going bad that will cause the tcc not to lock up when it's supposed to and also poor 2-1 downshifts and banging when going into gear.


My vss just went out in my 93atx and it had the same problem as your old one and it's just a $18 dollar part.

People with not very much experience in sho atx's can spend a lot of money for cheap parts.

for another example not having overdrive/tcc lockup is manily caused by a 10 cent clip broken, it takes about 30 min's to change and can save you 1,000's

So from my experience and loss of money lol your old tranny was probally perfect and if you did swap your vss sensor onto your new tranny the symptoms will still follow until you replace it.

Shogen2, so where is this clip located? What does it look like? Do you have the part number in case this is what is ailing my car too. It would be great to see a picture. I have a hard time visualizing what it could be.

Alright i found it here you go.

The O/D servo/tcc lockup cover is on the drivers side of the transmission on the firewall side,down low by the steering rack. Remove the drivers side front tire and you can get to the 3-8 mm bolts on the cover. I removed the cover and the servo,found the broken clip laying inside the transmission. Replaced it for less than $1 and now have 4th gear back/ overdrive back!

The c clip can be bought from ford or the hardware store it's a pretty simple piece but if it breaks o/d won't work and it's only about a dollar.

Oh and don't worry about loosing fluid not much will come out.

i figured that the tranny was ruined hence why i bought another sho . i was just reading a little on tq converters and it got me thinking about my tranny that i presumed dead without hesitation. i figured that maybe the vss was going bad for the past 2-5 k causing my delayed 2-1 shift and that the damage was already done.............well thanks for helping me clear myself of that now i can strip the parts i need without hesitation
