"Gunk" engine degreaser or the like at any parts store.

Simple Green and a rag will be a lot of work for much less cleaning.

Im with yamahaSHO, gunk engine degreaser works wonders

however I have only detailed my engine once and I was worried about water getting into places it shouldnt like in electrical connectors, on the alternator, ect.....

I know lots of people do this, but after I accidently spilled coolant on the alternator of my first car (Geo tracker) and the alternator was INSTANTLY dead I never wanted to get water near an alternator ever again.

The Gunk engine degrease is really just diesel fuel. It does help to water proof the connectors a bit. You still have to worry about water in the plug wells if you rinse it off with water. And it will leave a film.

Once done though I use the tire foam and a rag to get things shiny clean after the gunk and wash down with water.

I am just so scared to try any washing of my engine. I know it could use a good bath, but damn... if any water got into the plug wells or electrical connectors... wish it was like my old Tbird. Nothing but engine in that old tank.
