Have a little question going at another forum. Curious to see because the design of both cylinder heads is definitely performance oriented. Both four valve, both pent roof with DOHC design and pretty good performance right out of the box.

Does anyone know exact flow #s or anything of the sort? I am hoping yamaha comes out on top again.

thanks.

I dunno the fine points of Toyota engine specs, but the normally aspirated 2JZ in the third gen Supra made 220 HP out of 3L, according to AutoWeek
Same as what the SHO made, just from an inline rather than a V6. The SHO's engine did it in 1989, the Toyota came out here at least in 1991. So not a lot between them in VE. Was it heads, cams, or the dual length runners? Either way the head does have to flow to make the go. And a lot less complex than variable cams.

Supra comment got me thinking back. The second gen 2 valve/cylinder Supra, with the wing across the top of the rear window, was about 160HP. Ballpark 2700-2800 lb. I know that at Sears Point, now known as Sonoma Raceway, at a BMW club driving school/track day in about 1994, my '92 SHO was just about dead even with a Supra of this vintage, with him catching up in the corners somewhat and my having the advantage under acceleration. We diced enjoyably for quite a while, and left everything BMW with 3.5L or less for dead!

That Supra rear wing, it was dubbed "The bat-winged hamburger snatcher" by a car buddy of mine and I've never been able to get that name out of my head. Reference was to the Odd Bodkins comic of our youth, yeah, pretty obscure but it was popular locally as a strip in the SF Chronicle, as well as had been in National Lampoon. OK, ramble terminated. :nut:

Also remember, there are two stock versions of the 2J head. One for the 2JZ-GTE, which is the turbo version, it has different intake ports, and I believe better flow numbers. The other one is for the 2JZ-GE which is the N/A version. If you look up numbers make sure you are looking for the 2JZ-GE head for a more apples to apple comparison.

Yeah the second gen had three different head versions and the third generation had four different head versions.

The exhaust side sounds a little high flow rate. You usually want it to be 2/3 iirc. Might be wrong on that anyone care to weigh in on this?
