I got my rebuilt Tranny back in January and 900 miles later I couldn't get power to the wheels so I dropped the pan to see all sorts of things I shouldn't be seeing in my newly rebuilt. I Found out the filter was clogged from pieces on it. the filter element inside is compressed down to the wire frame from the pump trying to suck fluid. ( No pics of that yet) I put another filter in this morning so I could get to work but its starting to clog again already and it's only been 15 miles. I don't know what is shredding or why but I'm just hoping that the dude who rebuilt it gets the shit right this time. My dad told him to rebuild it with high energy clutches. Right now it doesn't look like he bothered to do that.

Here are some pics.

And this is what happened to the tranny the first time. I thought only the MTX's had this issue.

I feel ya on the ATX exploding. Mine did the same thing, and I almost went to a court martial because of it (yes, court martial, not NJP... but uh, the car ceasing to work was only one part of that long, sordid tale). See, when your car stops working, you have difficulty getting to work...

Anyway!

Definitely looks like something went srsly wrong on the rebuild. They say that on a fresh rebuild there will be some bits & pieces in the pan due to stuff breaking in. That, however, seems patently ridiculous.

No warranty on the rebuild?

My dad is trying to get ahold of the guy.

What do you think could have gone wrong? Do you think I that I got normal Taurus Clutches or that it is what you said, something just went wrong?

The problem is that there are so many things it could be, it's hard to tell. Looks like maybe a band disintegrated? But there are so many of them, it's impossible to tell which one. Really the only way to tell what's breaking is... to take it back apart. :frown:

If that is what's happening, a clutch band breaking... do I have to worry about it killing other parts with all the chunks flowing in this thing? or is it just gonna clog the filter again?

It's more than band material, as there is stuff on the magnet as well. Is this a whole new trans, or did you just get a new case and diff and swap out all of the other internals? Sometimes parts just go bad, but sometimes rebuilders don't really rebuild.... they just patch. Not sure how under the table this job was, or if you got a reciept for parts used or anything, but it could just be a used trans that he cleaned up and put some new seals/gaskets on. I know it's shady, but I used to work for a trans shop that would do that, even to bench jobs. So, sorry to say, but with that amount of material clogging the filter, the trans needs to come out again either way, because that material is floating though the entire trans (including lines and torque converter) and could cause more problems even if you keep cleaning out the filter.

I'm definitely thinking he did a patch job because this case if for a normal Taurus and it has my old SHO pan on it. It did have new clutches and gaskets and of course a new diff but I think he took all my old parts and put them in this one. The rebuild was about 1100 bucks I think. I know it's gotta come out but my gf is coming down in about 3 weeks for a whole week so if I take it out now I dont think it will be ready again in time and Im hoping to make it last until after she leaves that way I can use it for local driving such as to the movies and such. This damn car is almost as much fun to drive as my old 97 GTP but the experience is just about ruined with the amount of work i end up doing on it.

Also is my diff failure what usually happens on the MTXs? If it is will welding the pins fix it?

It looks like their is a hole blown through your case....rendering it worthless.

Buy a rebuilt unit from Ford, 3 year 36k warranty, and they will R&R it if it fails.

....to be fair to your SHO it isn't the cars fault that whoever put that tranny together didn't know what they were doing.

The Tranny that is in my car has a Three year warranty. I just need to make it last me a few weeks. While I'm doing that my dad is gonna set this guy in the right direction on how he wants it done. AGAIN. If we had the tools and room we would have rebuilt one on one of our workbenches.

I understand he didn't know what he was doing. The other problem with my car is that all the former owners didnt know what they were doing ethier. Once I fix something something else breaks. I was going to the auto parts store 3 times a week for the first 5 months of having the car.

Yea, unfortunately 15+ years of these cars being on the road with ignorant people working on them will do some damage.....

Just straighten her out and i'm sure she will reward you for it.

I'd be afraid to let this guy rebuild your next one, if he screwed this one up this bad.

Just got off the phone with the guy. He saw the pics and said "aww shit" then he said he would build another one and be sure it has the proper clutches and pick up the old one. :) I feel a little better now.

I hope that is the sound of a happy ending I am hearing. Get your car fixed, and in the meantime, rent an econo car while your friend is in town.
Help the rebuilder by finding a really good transmission on this forum that has no issues other than being tired out, and encourage your rebuilder to start with that one.... even if you have to pay a premium on the deal. Then direct him to the posts that describe the differences in the transmissions from the regular Taurus ones, even though they use similar id numbers.
This is SHO country.... you have to tell them everything.
