Ok... I have a 93 ATX SHO. I was on my way home last night and my Check Oil light went on. I checked this morning and there was NO oil. My friend and I had changed the oil a few weeks ago and figured it was slowly leaking out. We checked the drain plug and we tightened it up (It seemd a little loose) and then put oil in. Then while we were at it we changed the fuel filter as well. We then went for a drive. A soon as I got on it, there was white smoke comng out of the exhaust. headbang
I drove for about 20 minutes and made 2 stops. It defnitely cam out heavy after I hit the gas hard (A Maxima actually had to pull to the side of the road because he couldn't see) and was intermittent when normally driving.... Please HELP!!!

Are you sure it was white smoke?... Or a blueish-white smoke. A blueish-white smoke would mean you are burning oil. If you ran out of oil, your piston rings are most likely shot. To replace those, you would have to tear down the motor.

I just went and looked. It seems white to me... BUT It might have had a VERY light blueish hue to it. It also is coming from the engine too... Mostly from the belt area.

My friend also pointed out to me that my idle is too high. It is and has been idling at about 2000 RPM. I guess that should be a whole nother post though...

Just a note: After the Check oil light came on I only drove about 2-3 miles home. Would that be enough time for the piston rings to fry?

Just plain white smoke from the tail pipes would be coolant. Because you are losing oil, you may be seeing a oil being burnt(blueish tint and the smoke hangs around).

If the car ran completely out of oil, then a short trip could do some major damage to the rings.

You say you see smoke from the accessory area, where? As far as the idle... I would need to know more information.

Thanks. The smoke did seem to linger. How much $$ do you think it would be to get it fixed... or am I looking at a new car?
Also, would it be ok to travel short distances (I work 2 miles away) with it like this?

Okay long shot here but:

Oil leaks, hits leaking vacuum line, vacuum line sucks oil up smoke out tail pipes. Since your idling high this sounds like a vacuum leak, I know this is far fatched but it may be a possibility? shrug

Yes, that is a possibility. Good thinking thumb

If the rings are shot, it can be fixed. I don't know how much it would cost to have done because I always do my own work. If worse comes to worse, you can always get another SHO motor for a fairly low price.

I would still like to know where the smoke is coming from in the engine bay. Could oil be dripping onto a catalytic conveter?

EDIT: Where in New York are you located??

Where would the vacuum line be soaking up the oil from and why didn't it happen before?

My friend and I went out to look to see where the smoke is coming from. It's really hard to see because it's getting dark, but it looks like it's coming from the right side (It seemed left before, but it might have been from oil that we spilled while putting more in). To top it all off, it's still leaking a little bit of oil from the drain plug.

I saw an engine on e-bay going for $600 so far...
I would just be worried about the labor...

I live in Sayville,NY... Mid Suffolk County on the Island.

Thanks a lot guys for helping me out. thumb

Not sure where the leak would be... it really would be a long shot. The intake sets above where any real oil would get to.

I would not buy that eBay motor. It is way over priced. You could find another motor with lower milage for cheaper. I don't think that guy will sell that motor until he comes down at least half.

BTW: Your not supposed to post eBay links on here anymore.... Long story.

If you live on the Island, it is at least 4 hours away from me... If you lived closer I would come over to help you out. 3 hours is my limit.. Just ask Pat (AKA Rendyx) wink

Sorry about the e-bay link... MY Bad. doh
Thanks for the thought of coming here.
Would it be ok to drive it in the meantime for the 4 mile a day I'd have to drive it?

I would not drive it until you figured out, at least, what is actually wrong. If the rings are shot, you will have a lot of blow by and burn lots of oil. Drive at your own risk.

Can you please edit you previous post with the link and remove it please? Thanks
