I placed a rather large charge on my VISA today! :D I'll give you guys a hint, see if you can guess what they are.

They'll knock 30lbs of rotating mass off my car, the equivalent of 240lbs of dead weight! That should make a noticeable difference...hehe. wink

422_RPM%20POLISHED_hi_451x421.jpg

A little pricey but not too bad compared to other chrome 17's weghing 10lbs more.

Anyone willing to take a guess at the tires?
Excellent choice thumb

Oh and, Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's

thumb thumb Good eye!

Now I need some help choosing the tire size. I'm looking at 215/45R17 or 225/45R17. Here are the specs from Tirerack:

215/45R17
rim width-7"
section width-8.3"
tread width-7.1"
diameter-24.6"

225/45R17
rim width-7.5"
section width-8.8"
tread width-7.1"
diameter-24.9"

I'll be mounting them on 7" rims so the 225's section width will only be about 8.6". But why is the tread width the same? Anyone think I should go with the 225's anyways or would they be overkill on a smaller car like mine? Is there a tire weight difference to consider? Also what does "XL" and "SL" mean when it appears on the sidewall, as in:

215/45YR17 91Y XL

I was thinking more of the 245 ranges.... but if those are the choices, I would go with the one with more tread.... 225 thumb

LOL you Taurus owners are lucky to have that much room for tires. I have some 225/50R16 drag radials and they take up every available mm of space in the wheel well of my Topaz. Stock size is only 185/70R14.

I'm kinda leaning towards the 215's because they're $30 less per tire, shorter(for better gearing), probably lighter, and I have the Nitto's for the track. I can't see the extra 10mm of the 225's making a huge difference on the street and they may cause more clearance problems than I already have.

thumb I have a set of chrome 17x7" RPMs and 235/45/17 kumho mxs ready to put on my 91 come springtime... hard to let them sit in the box, but doubt they'd do too well in the snow/ice :p
GOOD CHOICE.

You guys put too wide of tires on your wheels. We aren't 4x4's ya know. Wider is not necessarily better.

In your case, I would definitely go with the 215/45/17. If it's available in a 205/45, you might consider that as well.

waaaaa?? wider is always better. hehe so is my mustang with 275/40/17's on 9 inch wide rims a simi? (it has 245/45/17s on it now an i can't keep the wheel grounded.)

what does that make a covette?! with its 9-11" wide rims! wink

OK, wider tires are not always better. Trying to fit the widest section width tire you can on a given wheel width is not better. Wider wheels are usually better.

Well I went with the 215/45YR17 Goodyears from Tirerack. I was just too worried about all the clearance issues with the 225's. Acording to the specs, they should have fit, but there was no room for error. Plus I'll save some weight and fuel mileage and I still have my Nitto's for the track. Even the 225's wouldn't hold when the nitrous hits anyways...lol!

$536US for all 4 isn't too bad and there's a $75 rebate on them. So after it's all said and done(s/h,tax,UPS fees, etc) they'll cost me about $825CDN(the CDN dollar is at a 10 year high!) The local dealer wanted $1300 including tax so I made out like a bandit. :D

Did you check out the Bridgestone S-02 and S-03's? I heard that not many people liked the old eagle F1's and the new Eagle F1 gs-d3. Most people where going for the s-02 or s-03's. That what i was looking at for the summer but decide on the kuhmo mx's for the best bang for the buck and they are suppose to be comprable to the 3 tires i mentioned.

I did look at the Bridgestones but the SO-2 is not available in the right size. The SO-3's have fairly good reviews but treadlife is quite low.

I don't have any personal experience with with either tire so I went with the Goodyears because there were almost no bad reviews on tirerack. Everyone seemed happy with all aspects including treadwear, traction, noise and wet traction. The killer tread pattern didn't hurt either. wink

If you had read what he said, TIRES, not wheels are what he was talking about... but a ludicrously wide tires on a narrow wheel, it becomes a sloppy handling balloon. Wider tires need wider wheels.
