My bud has a ****** 96 SHO, v6, and 5-speed manual and just about every single time he goes to put it into reverse, the thing grinds soo bad before it finaly goes in. Anybody have any thoughts? My guess was a bad synchronizer, but then again I don't know anything about SHOs

Ok, I'm not even gonna listen to my friend anymore. When he first got the car he said it was a 94 with a v8, but i was told that was impossible. The other day he said it was a 96 and I looked under his hood and I counted 6 pipes going down towards the block so I assumed those were the intake pipes and since there were 6, that there were 6 corresponding cylinders. Am I wrong? I don't know anything about this Gen I, II, III, FWD stuff. See, this is why I have a mustang...

It is a common problem for Gen 1 (1989-91) and Gen 2 (1992-95) 5 speed SHOs.
I believe that Gen 1 or 2 owners may be able to help if you posted a similar question under the 'SHO Maintenance & Troubleshooting - Engine & Drive Line' section.

Ok, somebody explain double clutching. I've read about it before but never REALLY understood how it works. Also, what are the drivetrain differences between the years / generations so i can figure out what year he has without decoding the VIN...

were those the only engines and transmisions available (respectively) for those model runs? Is there a plaque or badge or something inside the engine that says what it is?

all 96's and up are v8's with auto's. It would say 32v if it was a 96+ on the engine. If it has the pruddy intake as SHOwn above then it's a 89-95 sho.

Shift into third then reverse. Try using the GM Syncromesh ATX tranny fluid.

Nope, we already tried many times shifting it in every gear before reverse but it still grinds. Anyway, the engine does look like the one in the top left (SHOwn...haha, that was soo bad) and it most definatly has a 5 speed. Maybe it is a 94 after all?

Double clutching is simply depressing the clutch while the vehicle is in gear, shifting to neutral, releasing the clutch, depressing the clutch, shifting into your desired gear, and releasing the clutch. If you've ever driven a farm tractor, you have to do this to downshift in a situation where you're going uphill in too tall a gear and start to loose speed and are lugging the engine. It also works any time the tranny wants to grind when changing gear.

Double clutching is required for transmissions that do not have syncromeshers. It was a very common thing for Brit sports cars and such long ago, particularly when downshifting into first. I have not driven a tractor, so do not know which, if any, of their gears are commonly syncromeshed, but on cars these days, they all are. If you are having to double clutch, it would imply that you were having a syncro failure.

Double clutching when shifting into reverse? No. That would spin the transmission shafts up to engine idle speed. You want them at a dead stop to get into reverse without grinding. That is why we shift into another gear with the clutch pedal depressed - to stop the transmission gears from spinning at all since you should have the car stopped before trying to engage reverse. Double clutching would help shifting into reverse if the car was already rolling backwards!
