well,sorta. the actual spindle is different,,89 has old style 2 seperate bearings. 91 has the one piece bearing. but, if you swap the spindle with all the parts attached it would work.
spindle=different
bearings=different
hubs = different
caliper=same
caliper bracket=same
backing plate attached to spindle=different
rotors=different
pads=same

plain 'ol Taurus and Sables have the exact same spindles on a year to year basis as SHOs.

If I swap with all parts do I need to do both? The 91 looks wider.

interesting question, I assume you mean the distance between the holes the control arms attach to? or do you mean the holes in the backing plate? or do you mean the wheels look farther apart? there is a difference in thickness at the backing plate holes, which is offset by the thickness of the center of the rotor and the hub offset so it zero's out to place the wheel at the same location. thats why its an all-or-nothing situation, and the different bearings.

It looked like it would off set that wheel. I just went back to pick n pull. Now I have to get a ride to the store to get a 15mm wrench. Because my tool kit has the socket but the wrenches stop at 14. Thanks for the info. Also if I did swap 91 the rear spindle/hub would it allow wider rims/tires the then the 89 will? Thanks again.

Does anyone have or know where to get an 89 spindle? Tarsus and sable 89 will not work and the part is 500 bucks. If I can't get it fix does anyone want an 89 3.0 motor?

how are they different? 89 was the last year for the style with 2 seperate bearings in the rear. 90 on had the bearing pressed into the hub. 90 thru 92 had vented rear rotors. starting in 93 the rears were solid disks. with that change the bare stripped down spindle remained the same, but all the brake stuff, and the hub, changed and is not interchangeable.
there are basically 3 series of rear brakes

89, and 89 only..no ABS

90,91,92 all the same

93 thru 99, all the same

for the last 2 series the hub looks the same, but its really a couple of millimeters different to match the differing thickness of the center of the respective rotors. that keeps the wheel in exactly the same place.
I may still have an 89 rear spindle laying around that I could compare to a later model.

Sorry about my last post I was a lil ******. Ford told me that they could get me a new spindle but it's 490 and pick n pull only has a 91 sho. The axle part that the bearings sit on in the 89 sho is different then 89 Taurus. Ford told me that only the 89 Continental has the same. The 89 sho has cone looking bearings so the axle thins towards the tip. 89 Taurus has just a straight axle. Can anyone tell me where to get an 89 sho RR spindle?

OK, ya got me on that one. I have dismantled an 89 SHO and yes indeed its as you describe it. But I have never looked at the rear of an 89 Slo (Taurus) so I can't say for certain whats back there.

Just looked at a genuine Ford 86 Taurus manual. It clearly shows the rear spindle as the big and small bearing type. Try parts from an 86,87,or 88.
