My SHO has been creating a lot of smoke, but I only notice it when I am at a stop for a bit.

Mr95Gl mentioned that the valve stem seals might be bad. Would the seals cause something like that?
It looks more like a white smoke. I'm not good at determining the smell of exhaust so i can't help tell you if it is coolant or oil.

When I am driving normally there is no smoke coming out, and at WOT it doesn't even pour out the smoke. Just at idle.

I believe I mentioned this before in another thread somewhere, but here is a video to better explain the problem I'm having with my "bouncing" tach.

Note : this is not related to original question of this thread

As you can see, I'd hold above 2-3k and it when I let off the gas, it drops below idle, almost stalls, and the red light of death flickers.
Doesn't do it constantly, but it will do it the entire time while the car is on until I start it up again and they it won't do it at all.

I'm pretty sure it's blue smoke your seeing because it did it with me several times. After downshifting then coming to a stop, it'd puff out a cloud of blue smoke. It occasionally does it, not always. Did you replace that overflow bottle?

I dunno man, my atx drops way further down then that (I have some stalling issues) and I don't get the low oil press light until like 400 rpm, I mean I supposed my sending unit could just be old and not as touchy as it used to be, but it's only got 95k miles on it. That light would scare me especially with the miles on that car, and not knowing if the rod bearings were ever changed.

Nope, actually I'm at home right now for a bit to do exactly that. My lunch break = fix SHO lol.

The SHO is leaking coolant constantly and I can't tell if it is coming from the overflow anymore. Seems like I sprung a leak on the radiator on the driverside, but I can't tell until I replace/fix that bottle. If it continues I'm going to just get some stopleak for the radiator this weekend when I get the bearings done.

The smoke doesn't seem to be blue, it is just white. Not very thick but definitely white. Idk, it didn't do it as bad last night and today.

Honestly I haven't seen ANY blue smoke since I bought the car, just the white smoke at idle. Doesn't do it when I'm driving or above idle. I'm sure I'll figure it out this weekend though.

That's why they are getting changed this weekend :)

If that's white smoke, that means coolant is getting into the cylinder somehow (blown head gasket) but you are sure its white smoke, not just the normal cold weather condensation? Does it smell at all? **** matt is coming to do your rod bearings show him, he knows his shit he might be able to point you in the right direction:thumb:

Also as far as stop leak, to each his own, but I wouldn't put that crap in my engine, it clogs shit up. I would fix the root problem, not put a band aid on it;)

I was thinking head gasket as well, as I have experienced this before with my GL.
Like I said, it does it constantly. It wasn't cold enough the other day for it to do that, but it did anyways.
My car sorta smells like I'm running with no cats though.

I'm paranoid

Back to the original issue . . . .

Realize that the difference between the "white" smoke associated the induction of water versus the "light blue" from oil burning may not be strikingly different. It can be difficult to distinguish between the two based on the available lighting and/or the angle at which the smoke is seen, when the amount of "blue" smoke being produced is relatively light.

While the following are generalizations, they can serve as a starting point for diagnosing oil consumption:

  • smoking for short period after start - valve stem seals (oil leaks-down into cylinders after engine shutdown)

  • smoking under hard acceleration - valve guides (oil suck into cylinder during down-stroke)

  • smoking continuously - rings (oil ring failing to "wipe" excess oil from cylinder walls) or valve guides (totally shot)

So, how many miles on the engine ?

:burnout:

Lots of miles.
240k

I had a friend check it out tonight. It doesn't smell like coolant and it isn't thick enough to show anything other than just normal smoke. I guess i'm just being paranoid.

It definitely smells like exhaust, no other signs of anything else. If there is another warm day I guess I'll be able to see if anything changes, but for now it seems fine.

Still can't figure out that idling problem.

Idle problem-

Did you pull any codes? did you run the test yet?

When my MTX did that my Throttle Position Sensor was going, not to mention my MAF was screwed up. If your TPS has never been changed now would be a good time to test it. If you do the full KOER test a goosing is part of the TPS test.

There isn't CEL, but most stuff that could cause the problem have been replaced. I'll run it for codes on the weekend.

This has been happening since I got the 94, and I already swapped my TB with the sensor from my 89 which I know worked perfectly fine.

My DIS might be no good, so I'll swap that as well just incase. As for the MAF, I haven't done that yet either, but I assume the car would be running horribly if that were the case.
On the contrary it runs very well. Better than my 89 did.

don't be so sure, maf's can really screw things up and seem like they are working fine. I would take it out and clean it at the very least. I will be trying to figure out this problem with my atx within the next month or so, and I will definitely let you know what I find as it seems like we have the exact same symptoms.
