Well it finally came on today when I was taking one of my random illegal cruises down a country road in my '92. I noticed that it seemed to be putting out smoke from the exhaust and then the CEL came on. My problem is my car has no insurance and no plates, and I live in the country, so I can't drive it into AutoZone and have them run the codes. So I guess what are common symptoms that cause the CEL to come on and produces smoke out the exhaust? Hopefully this is a common problem.

Oh no...what does that mean? And not sure of the smoke color because it was dark. I'll have to check tomorrow in the daylight and report back. I'll check the codes tomorrow.

Well I just got done running the codes...wow that was confusing, but I think I got them. Hopefully one of these causes some smoke, which by the way seemed to be white or gray, something like that. Well here goes

KOEO Test
114 - IAT sensor out of range,
117 - ECT sensor is/was low or grounded,
177 - Oxygen sensor not switching - system was rich Left or Front HO2S,

KOER Test
116 - Engine Coolant (ECT) sensor out of range,
167 - No Throttle Position sensor change in "goose" test (must get at least 25% rotation) - TPS,
225 - Knock sensor not tested (ignore if not pinging),

Cylinder balance test I got 9 flashes so I'm assuming all is well there.

Like I said I may be wrong on these codes but I think I got them for the most part. Hopefully one of these links to the smoke. Sometimes it just started flashing and I wasn't sure whther it was the same code or it had moved on to another one. I guess I can always try it again if these don't make sense. Now I need some more input guys and gals.

You pulled the codes with the engine and the outside temp cool? And you forgot to do the goose test when running the KOER test. Other than that maybe a O2 sensor.

I let the car idle for about 10-15 minutes prior to pulling the code, so maybe it didn't get warm enough since I didn't drive it anywhere. The outside temp was between 45-50 degrees if that could cause a problem. Which part is the "goose test?" I followed the instructions but maybe I did something wrong. I'll have to try it again I guess. Thanks for your thoughts.
