One of the guys in my Mustang Club just got an S550... at $110,000! I went to the MB USA site to check it out. I was surprised that the options on it were an exact match to the SHO, except for the parking assistance thingy. Oh, the Mercedes didn't have the BLIS or CTA. The Mercedes also had a 382 hp NA V8 rated at 14 city/21 hwy. It even had the LED corner lamps. Without going into manufacturing tolerances/quality and the prestige of owning a Mercedes, I think I'ld rather have the $69K in my pocket.

I like the new SHO, too. But this thread is nothing more than simple ball-washing...

I guess it's my fault that I used vs. in the title instead of side by side. My intent wasn't a ball washing, but to make a point IMO that Ford made the SHO in the tradition of ole Henry... a touring sedan for the well-to-do common man. If I made enough money that $69K didn't mean anything to me, of course I would get the Mercedes... but I don't. I'm not thinking you can put Ford in the same category as Mercedes, Maserati, Jaguar, Aston Martin etc., it's an alternative for those that would like to have one of those. Also, IMO, it's not too bad an alternative.

Well said PonySHO. I didn't think you were seriously trying to compare the SHO to the S550 straight up.

I took it that you where saying that the SHO has some of the same items for less money. Not comparing the cars.

Can anyone tell me what the original SHO was mostly compared to in it's day? I thought it was a BMW costing a lot more. So whats wrong with this thread?

I have had much time behind the wheel of the MB here (2008 S550 4-Matic) and a very brief time test driving a 2010 SHO as a possible replacement for my 07 Escalade coming off lease soon. The SHO is very impressive, a blast to drive, and has many more features than the Escalade (plus better build quality and tolerences). With that said, the SHO and the S550 do also share many advanced features. But, they have very different characters. The SHO is a bargain in its own right. But I would guess that if some time was spent in an S550, you would see and feel where some of the extra 69K went. :)

i thought it was interesting that the BMW 8series came out in 1989 at 80,000 $$$$!!!!!!!! in 1989, and the "new sho" was basically as fast as their V8 model, the V12 wasnt much faster.

I was gonna buy a 535i in '89, which would have been $45K. At the time, I had a plan to buy a used 328GTSi Ferrari as a play car, so I bought a SHO instead. 535i was still a better car.

If you had $120K burning a hole in your pocket, you would get the MB. Or any number of other cars, probably a BMW, and the SHO wouldn't even be on the radar screen.

Come back in 10 years and look at resale, cost of maintenance, and how well the car has held up. MB would be all over the SHO.

Because you can't afford the best in the class, don't justify you lack of funds.

Put a big crate motor into a rusty Yugo. Faster than both of these cars. Who the f-in cares??

MB vs SHO

Just got a 2010 SHO to replace an E55 wagon as a daily driver.

The SHO is even more of a sleeper than the E55. While it lacks the speed and solidness of the AMG it also lacks the crushing depreciation that AMG's have . A great value for the $!

Yeah, because the only thing that matters in the purchase of any car is straight line performance, right? :nut:

Interesting collection of vehicles/plane you have there.

Still regret selling my 911. As I understand, Fred Hurder (who bought it) recently sold it. I will own another one of these days.

The quality of the driving experience matters a lot in cars. After driving the 911, getting into a SHO is like driving a dump truck. Doesn't mean the SHO wasn't good for what it was, but buying a better driving experience cannot be tied to price. $80K in my pockety would be a new 997 (911), not two new SHOs, or ten old SHOs, or whatever........

A filet at Ruth's Chris costs probably 5-6X what one costs at Ponderosa. But it's worth it. Except for the folks that can only afford a Ponderosa filet and brag what a "good deal" it is.

Some of the comments seem to forget the spirit of this thread. It's about the best bang for the buck. It's a Ford. It's not targeted for people that are in the market for a $100K+ car. You can talk about how much better these high end cars are, but you're talking apples and oranges. Tell me whats wrong with offering a car that's got all the amenities of those high end sedans at a price that more of the public can afford.

A number of Ford GT owners that are now proud 2010 SHO owners would tend to disagree with you. In all honesty, if I had 120k burning a hole in my pocket, I would buy the 2010, then dump another 40k into it, just because I am stupid like that.

It all comes out in the end. And I bet nobody can tell the difference at that point. A little ***** humor for the day.

And yes, I have eaten at $100 plate steakhouses before.

It is by no accident that BMW and Mercedes have climbed to the top of the automotive heap, and are in the enviable position that they now hold. They did it by hard work, love of the cars they were designing, and a genuine desire to please a discriminating customer. Ford and other domestic cars come close every now and then, but their dismal failures of some models tarnish whatever triumph they hoped to achieve.
I maintain that the SHO's of past and present are one of these few bright lights that Ford hasn't kept hidden under a bushel. In spite of handy-capping themselves with a front wheel drive, base model production car starting point, they managed to turn out a very respectable auto; and kept at it, in spite of dismal sales.... trying to establish a brand. The 89 SHO will someday be recognized as a milestone car (like the 60 or 61 Lincolns that were so radically different than anything else ever seen), but until then we have to put up with the laughter. But you can't do it with engineering alone, just like BMW has not done it with engineering alone. You have to love the vehicle you are selling and stand behind the vehicle you are selling, and set up a system where the used vehicle is just as sought after as the new vehicle.
Being best in class is a worthy goal while you are re-tooling your whole business enterprise to become best overall. You do this by offering the great features of the elite models on the "not so elite" models, and Ford should be commended for embracing this concept that is guaranteed to yield dividends.

Yep. I remember there was one member of this very forum with a $1000 SHO that was a little faster in a straight line than a certain BMW who claimed something along the lines of "for the amount of money the BMW cost he should have been able to pull away from me." :nut: No clue whatsoever.
