Hi,

I'm having my rear struts replaced and the mechanic says there's a lot of rust at the knuckle/spindle. I don't see this part on Rockauto; does it go by another name? Does anyone know another place I can find this part? On ebay and other sites I'm finding front spindles, but no rear spindles.

Thanks!

It's not something you can buy new...used only. I wonder what he considers a lot of rust. The main issue is with the pinch bolt that holds the strut in, can break off.

How much rust can there be? I have never seen anyone need that very much due to rust. Someone local should have something for sale, just change bearings and you're good to fly.

You dont need a new one. Not because of rust. He just wants more $$

This. He's worried about breaking the pinch bolt, not necessarily the rest of the knuckle.

Drill a small hole in the strut to remove the gas pressure.
Soak the pinch bolt with rust penetrant.
Heat around the pinch bolt and remove.
You rally want to avoid breaking the bolt off.
It can be very difficult to drill and remove.

Perfect, thanks so much, everyone!

I had some water leaking issues in my trunk a while back, so it seems the water soaked through and brought on this rusting at the spindle.

The mechanic said that he's going to try to drill it out but that I may need to replace the spindles, so I'll send him the info from Area 91, and hopefully that will help.

Thanks again!!

It's Virginia, rust free knuckles are everywhere in junk yards. Just needs to be a 93-95 rear disc car with ABS, any Taurus/Sable.

I have had very good success with soaking the pinch bolt with PB Blaster overnight, then unscrewing the pinch bolt as far as I can, then back in, then back out, and work it in and out until I can get it all the way out.

I just heat them. Never had one break doing that. Don't get it glowing red.

I did break one before just using PB blaster. Even if you break off the bolt and have to drill it out, you can still just nut and bolt it and wouldn't need a new knuckle.

....and on that note, I don't really know of any yards in that area, I'm down in Richmond. But if you need something, let me know.

The truth is spoken below. All the while, continuing the pBlaster pBarrage. Use a breaker bar. Your triceps will be ******, but this works even on Michigan cars.
