I am in terrible need of rear struts! I am envious of those of you who have put these new struts with fancy names that I can't pronounce on their cars, but I'm afraid that they are beyond my financial capabilities. I am not interested in lowering my car or even really hugging corners like a formula one racer, I just want a great ride without the extra thump in the rear end.

The parts outlets around here are Western Auto and NAPA. Western only carries Monroe struts, and NAPA has their own brand which I suspect is also Monroe. The struts they are recommending are $56.00 each. I am just wondering if these are so bad that I should wait another eternity until I can afford some fancy-pants struts, or will these do a good enough job? The struts from both places come with a lifetime warranty, so that is comforting. I will be putting them or a 1993 SHO with 160,000 miles.

Any recommendations would be helpful, especially if you have some snazzy struts you would like to unload cheap to a guy who is humbled just to own such a precious car like ours.

This topic is well covered in this forum. You should do a search first and read all the posts.

I find that the best advice and comments are from the past, and folks are less likely to reply to a well covered topic.

Lot's to read!

I would love to hear some replies to this.
I don't think anyone has ever discussed struts other than the "unpronouncable named ones"
Good question ottosho... I agree with you.

I'm in the same boat as ottosho. But I need ALL new struts. I had a set of Koni's on my '97 Jetta and found they had a good ride along with great performance. Little pricey though!

If you need to replace your struts, and don' want to spend a fortune doing it, try the KYB GR2 struts available from www.shox.com .

I got 4 for around $220(includes shipping. Struts were $180 or so).

Also, if the rear end is sagging, I guess some people have got Moog rear coil springs. It won't lower the car, they just replace the worn, saggy rear springs.

Also, I have HEARD that the KYB's handle ok for a stock SHO, but not modified... shrug I bought them because I also cannot afford to buy the fancy Tokico's.

Good luck.

Folks,

This is a topic that interests me but from a different perspective. See my other posts on the topic, as I've spent considerable time planning to do the job right the first time. If I was seriously fund-limited, and absolutely had to do it tomorrow, I'd purchase Sachs struts, Moog springs SLIGHTLY (10in./lb.) stiffer than stock IF yours were originally SLO (do a search "spring codes"). Replace ALL of the associated strut/spring rubber, nuts, bolts. Seems many of you have 100k++ miles, so I almost guarantee all of these pieces died long ago or were replaced with crap.

I'll keep all informed of my quest thumbs_u

Moog Cargo Coils from NAPA $62/pr
Monroe SensaTracs from NAPA $60 ea
Upper Mounts from Advance $30 ea

The sound of quiet rear struts, no sagging rear end, and no bounce in the back - Priceless!

So are the NAPA branded shocks basically Moroe as I suspected?
Thanks for all of the replies so far.

yes...napa shocks/struts are monroe...
in fact... what you will more than likely get is a monroe box with the napa symbol superimposed on it
