I've done a search and it sounds like I have to replace a rear (both) strut tower mount.

Is the car safe to drive until I have them replaced?

Thanks,
Tom

I drove my 89 with bad strut tower mounts. I had to replace my struts and springs in the back. I'm not sure if the bad mounts cause the bad struts and springs or vice versa. Either way i drove it for a few months like that until i couldn't take the rattling anymore.

There's nothing special about the rear suspension on the SHO that it needs to be taken to a SHO specific mechanic. It's acutally a pretty easy setup for the rear struts/springs. Three bolts on top, and one pinch bolt on the bottom. Just though I'd save you the hasle of finding a SHO specific mechanic to fix something that can be done right at Pepboys, or your local mechanic. Just get the parts you want to go on there (not some crap that Pepboys would want to recommend) and go have someone put it in. Just my .02. :)

True, the suspension on the SHO is the same as that of a plain old Taurus. Only the spring and strut rates are different and the strut mounts were the police package versions. Labor effort and procedures are the same though.

Worn strut mounts may cause an increase in the negative camber that can cause more rapid and uneven wear on the tires and less than optimal handling. Not dangerous, but don't go road racing.

If memory serves me right, Mike Courtney is the man to see in Minneapolis. He owns Courtney Truck service or something like that. Don't let the name fool you, he used to (or still does) race an SHO and has been written up in articles by the old SHO Registry.

Would worn rear strut mounts cause a tire to be "out of round"?

No, that would be due to a bad tire.
