After replacing the cps, water pump and timing belt I heard a knocking under the rear intake. After removing the intake and rear valve cover I turned the engine by hand and saw the cam chain appear to be tight and then loosen. Each time I turned it the same thing happen taunght then loose. I'm thinking this is the source of the problem loose cam chain. If this is the problem what do I need to do in order to fix it. I have searched through the post and it seems as if this is common however I can't seem to find how to fix the problem. The more details the better I am a novice at this do it yourself version and have lots to learn. :hail: :hail: :hail:

Also when I replaced the timing belt the mark on the belt that is suppose to line up with the crank sproket was one gear off to the right. All the gears were ligned up perfectly it is just the line on the belt near the crank shaft that was off. Not sure if this would be the root of the problem causing the cam chain to be loose??? Any suggestions?

The casue would be the chain tensioner. They are no longer made. You will need to go the junkyard for it or see if anone has them for sale.

There are 2 marks, one for ATX and one for MTX. If the cam marks and the crank shaft marks all line up and the car runs fine it is okay. Mine are no where near lined up but it is okay.

No, it's on the tensioner itself and is visable with the valve cover off.

Take the tensioner out and pull out the retaining pin (I used a small nail and a small hammer to tap it out). At that point the tensioner will come apart - note carefully how it comes apart because it must go back the same way. What I did at this point was throughly clean out the piece inside that has the ball in the end of it, and then let it soak overnight in B-12 and then cleaned it again (with more B-12). After that it worked like new.

The tensioners are only really 'dead' when the pad is completely worn through.
