Hi all, I'm looking for the correct wheel stud for my SHO. Not the short ones. Anyone have it? Thanks!

I break studs all the time, and haven't had any trouble just walking into a parts store and asking for studs for the appropriate year Taurus. They're pretty common.

The short ones are what come for the std Taurus, and you don't get full threads from them.

I went looking at multiple stores this past week for new studs for my 91, as the ones on the new hub were the shorties. I've found correct long ones that were undersized (no grip in the hub holes) and oversized (too thick to pul through the hub without a press, and I've already mounted the hub in the new wheel bearing & 94 knuckle).

I'm banging out the studs from my old 91 knuckles now for future use, as it's a PITA to find what I want.

FYI, the (2) Autozone stores I went to had different studs for the same PN - don't call the store with a PN, go in & see for yourself. The one for the Taurus they came up with in the computer was a shorty, FWIW.

I am sorry for digging this up from the past, but I am running into the same issues and was hoping someone could help out.....

The knurl/splines on the long 12mm studs at 3 different parts stores all measure about 0.050" too small in diameter (or "no grip in the hub hole", as was mentioned above). One place even took me back behind the counter to look and the best thing I could come up with is actually a 1/2" x 20 stud. This one is a bit too large on the knurl/splines (about 0.012" larger than the stud that came out of the hub but I assume the old ones lost 2 or 3 thousanths of diameter when pressed into the hub. I too, have new hubs and bearings pressed into my front spindles and am not too interested in taking a 8000 mile suspension back apart.... So, two questions come to mind:
1.) Is the 9-10 thou oversize on the knurl too much to pull through the hub without using a BFH, and/or,
2.) Anyone have a valid part number as I have to make a decision by tomorrow. If not, I guess I will give the 1/2 inchers a shot and live with two differing lug nut sizes.

Thanks for any help

It depends on what hub you have, too. FWIW, I got two boxes of hub+bearing from NAPA and each one had incompatible studs in them. i.e., one had holes too big for stock studs (I think the other was okay hole-wise, but the studs were too short).

If you need to replace a stud, take what remains of the old one and try to get it matched up. If you know you have a stock hub, then a plain Taurus stud should work.

That is what I figured.... I found an older set of hubs I had from a Gen II spindle assy I bought a while back and popped a couple out. Sure enough, I had two different sizes.

I have been shopping for a couple of days doing just this. I wanted to replace all of them on this hub being that I assume they have all had a rough ride (one sheared off and the others were loose when I got it home. I ended up chucking one of the new 1/2" x 20's in a drill and then used a file to shave a couple thou. off of the splines. At least now, I have a backup plan in case I can't find anything in the morning. Thanks for the reply.
