Old Member needs help...

I havent posted in a long time. well, since I moved to southern florida at least. But I need some help. A while back, I was driving down the road, when my slightly loud valve tick became a monstrous deafening tick. something broke loose. the car drives, but the knocking is amazing. I feel this may be as simple as a thrown or broken shim. or it could be terminal. I am not sure. I have finally mustered the money and will to pull the top of the engine apart and fix the car. I simply cannot live without her much longer. But being in southern florida, with no reputable mechanics I can rely on, I have to do it myself. what all do I need?

Everything on the 60k has been done save for the valve shims. So I know I will need a set of those. But I also have no knowledge of how to check them and install them. Anything else I would need? also, how do I get a hold of a set of shims and that old school videotape of how to do it? I have the cash to finally buy what I need, but no idea were to get it all from. so thats why I need your help. Please, help me get my loved SHO back on the road. I want to drive her around so badly.

You probably either spit a shim out of its bucket or spun a rod bearing.

I'd get in there and diagnose it before worrying about the 60K stuff...

You might find it's terminal or you might find it's easily repairable.

Random, I can help you with the valve adjust tools & shims IF thats the issue. Call me & I can walk you through the procedure. First you need to find out whats making the noise.Is it up top or down low?

Another possibility is a cam chain tensioner failed....which is something else to inspect while you have the top apart.

I also have a few shims I could send you in the event you need them. Narrow down where the noise is coming from first (upper or lower), if it's low I'd check the rod bearings first. Did the red oil light come on at all?

The noise is up high, near the front of the engine. the oil light didnt com on at all. i was pulling away from a light when it happened. I immediatly shut the car down.
