I am sure a lot of you have the same problem as me...your automatic antenna just sits there. Well mine worked and the didn't work, and then it worked, and as of two days ago it doesn't work again. Has anyone replaced their motor or the whole unit with one of those universal rubber antennas? How hard of a procedure is it?

mine does the same thing, except i can hear the motor running. can you hear yours? I think maybe the motor isn't gripping the antenna. let me know if, and how you fixed it.

I need to replace mine as well. But all i need is the mast. If you still hear the motor going it might be just a broken mast inside the unit. Ford does sell just the mast as a replacment.

I think that the guy who owned my car before me must have went through a car wash and broke it because mine is just the regular non-power metal antenna. It doesn't bother me much, but what's involved in those little rubber ones? Like cost, installation, etc. thanks!

I heard you get bad reception due to the fact that the radio waves are above the car. Thats why the ant. is so high. And on the new cars they are on the roof and small.

I still hear the motor in mine...and it will make it go up, but it won't make it go down. If I assist it...IE push it just a little bit while I hear the motor it will pull it down. Still waiting to hear how easy of a DIY job it is

Real easy...all you have to do is unscrew the top of the antenae housing (it is a nut..you can use needle nose pliars) and have someone turn on the radio then pull the old mast out is will have a real long cord made plstic on the end mkae note of which way the teeth face. Then open your new mast orient the teeth the same way and cut the radio off once or twice...problem solved.

Prob hitting a stripped part...you could pull these out look at it and re install it...but a replacement mast is only 30 bucks.

mine wouldn't go down but he motor kept running, so i just got ****** and napped it off one day. its not smoothed over, i didn't like the look of it anyways, i was replaced with one that sticks to my dash, where the windshield hits it.

I replaced my mast with a $19.99 one that was for a GM from Wal-mart. It looks ideantical to the Ford one. First thing you have to do it re-move chrome nut, there is a special tool for this, but I just put a screw driver in one of the slots and tapped it with a hammer. Once that is removed you will need a 14 mm deep socket thin wall to loose the nut that holds the mast in place. Then once that is removed have a buddy turn the radio on, the antena should come up, when it nears it's higest point grab ahold of it and kepp pulling it up. It should come right up and out. Go buy a replacement mast and do what I just said in reverse.

You know i have done exactly what you described with my other SHO, when i went to do it to my current one however the 14mm nut wouldn't come off? Weird huh i just kept turning and it kept turning and never would loosen up...

Any ideas?

The only thing that I can think of is that the socket is sitting on top of the nut and it just feels like you are turning the nut. I would try a couple different 14mm deep scoket thin walls, cause some are different than others.

I've got an old(about 3-4 months) Popular Mechanics article that goes into detail on replacing the mast, and cleaning out any broken guide pieces from the motor. If there is any interest, I could try to scan it and send it via email.
