Welp, I'm back to having an issue haha. Thanks to all of you guys for the help with the suspension and crank sensor. But now my starter motor is going out. It barely turns the engine, and this afternoon, I had to get underneath and hit it with a hammer to get it started. This one I have now was from my grandpa, and he always goes to Napa. My question is, what one from Rock Auto would y'all recommend? Or if anyone has one they would sell for a discounted price maybe. I have to do the rest of the 60k here this next week once the rest of my parts arrive

If I can't find a Motorcraft part I usually go with AC Delco if available and it cross references correctly. You need to cross ref and I would recommend searching local so, if you get a dud out of the box, you don't have to play the shipping back and forth game. I use Rock Auto to look at parts and then see if I can get close locally or get cross ref numbers. Plus there is probably a core charge and you have to send it off and hope that doesn't get messed up...

Yeah, that doesn't sound fun playing the shipping game. I'll probably swing by the junk yard this week and see if I can pull one. If not, I'll probably get the AC Delco I was looking at on Rock Auto and hope it's good. Other AC Delco stuff has worked well, but a 2 outta 2 doesn't seem like much

If it came from NAPA a while ago, and you have a receipt, it probably has a lifetime warranty. I've got a stack of starter receipts, part # 76101, from all the exchanges. 12 tooth starter for the SHO.

BTW, NAPA no longer carries the ATX alternator, they had to order from the manufacturer.

I don't have the receipt haha. I just ordered the AC Delco because screw it, I'm replacing everything else anyway.

Do you mention the alternator because I should replace that at the same time?

BTW The ACDelco starter that is on RockAuto new is 10 tooth - you can tell because clicking the part number lists all types of cars instead of just Taurus.

The alternator mentioned just to highlight that even basic parts are disappearing from the stores. Only one of 10 O'Reilly's had Motorcraft spark plugs.

Does NAPA keep stuff on electronic file like AutoZOne? Last replacement battery for my friends suv had the previous one I put in it 2-3 yrs earlier and still got the prorated $ back on the new purchase. No receipt but on file in computer

Good info!! That is why I stated in previous post to make sure the cross ref is correct. You can get the reg vs SHO different part alot put into aftermarket parts systems. Sometimes they are the same part, other times there is a difference and you have to dig to make sure before you pull the trigger

I've kept receipts. The NAPA stores seem independently owned, or owned by region. Some are little-town mom-and-pop.

I got back enough prorated on my bad NAPA battery... that the new inflation priced battery cost the same as the old one.

Well dang it. Is it important to have the 12 tooth vs the 10 tooth? I think I still have the original, and I saw that rebuild guide somewhere on here

This is one of 11 reasons I try and not use Rock Auto. I and they made plenty of mistakes over the years and the shipping back and forth killed too much time turned out to be more hassle than most $ savings. At least close by I can drop in and return and explain things to a human

Sounds wise. Could I swap the parts of the 12 tooth to the 10 tooth?

Use Amazon. Rockauto's return process is insane. I use them to look up part numbers and then look on Amazon for a better price and zero hassle returns.

So it looks like it won't last as long, but it'll get me home?
I would not monkey around with that. Is there somewhere local that has the correct part or can get it shortly? I would do that and return the RA one if you know it is incorrect. Alot of the brands I used to use are not showing up in search (haven't had to do one in a decade+). I would get the first one that is correct and reasonably priced. If it has a warranty even better if the build quality is unknown. Rebuilt/reman electrical stuff is often a crapshoot. I had to go through 4-5 alternators a 15yrs years ago when supply was $hit right out of the box at parts stores

I don't think anyone can get it to my part of Colorado quickly. Shipping is usually 4-5 days at best. I'll see what I can do

So I totally had an answer to prayer. I got home yesterday to find a Rock Auto package, figured it was my starter and other parts. Opened it up and there is the AC Delco starter at the bottom amongst my new seals and hoses. And it's a 12 tooth. Stamped right on it. Looks functionally identical to the old one. Installed it last night and it fired up immediately. So glad I dont have to worry about it now
