I'm looking for a new exhaust system for my 89 SHO because it's all rusted. I need everything. Maybe even a y-pipe. Anyone know a good place I can get everything for cheap? Should I piece something together with Rockauto? Monroe wanted $950 for a cat-back system. Obviously i'm not doing that. Please let me know your recommendations. Thanks.

exhaust systems are simply not cheap no matter what.

That being said i have done recently(a month ago) the most economical exhaust possible, that is get all the parts, and spend 30 hours cutting/welding, the y pipe is the hardest. But even with doing ALL the work myself i ended up spending 350$.

Oh btw i replicated the stock exhaust system accept with some nice flow adjustments, IE mandrel bent and niiiiice y-pipes. Oh and an equal volume y-pipe.

So 800$ for a mandrell bent exhaust sounds fair considering the work it takes to make one yourself.

WOW, $950.00? That thing better add about 50hp and sound great! I personally had a custom 2.75" cat back system, 18"x4" Magnaflow resonator, and 2 dual tipped Magnaflow mufflers w/DTM style tips for approx. $675. Sound is very deep with very little if any rasp. Performance was also increased mostly mid and high RPM's.

900$ isnt too outrageous for a qulity custom exhaust. You said you paid 675 for you custom cat back add 300 for the ypipe and that comes out to 975. And like i said the parts to build one alone are 350$, and the ammount of work it takes to make a mandrel bent exhaust is outrageous.

Your best choice would be to go with the summit racing exhaust, once you get ti take it to a mufflershop and have them weld it together so you dont get any leaks. The only problem i see with the dynomax exhaust is they dont specify the tubing gauge, i like using 14 its nice and heavy so it lasts longer.

That depends whether you are speaking of the Y-pipe @the rear where the single splits off to the 2 mufflers or are you speaking of the cat. assem. from the mannifolds. If you are speaking of the cat. assem. you are correct $300 is not a bad price but if you are speaking of the rear that is a different case!
