Im lookin to pick up this 1993 white automatic, and the guy told me that there is a pin that is messed up or something.... basically he said it doesnt allow the car to go into second gear, i have never heard of anything like this. the car has 120k. in pretty good shape. He said i have to drop the tranny fix this tiny little thing and its good to go. I basically wanna know if that is a possibility or it just needs a new tranny. i know the 1993 trannys are bad. but i was hoping for a quick fix for now. Thanks for the help.

Paul,

Does he mean that you can't physically move the shift lever to the second gear (2) position on the center console? And can it be moved to 1st and "D", but not 2nd?

im not sure, the guy that im getting it from owns a junkyard, he bought the car to part it out, the previous owner to him told him what i stated in my previous post. so he has done nothing with it. i asked him to try but he said the dis module is gone and it needs a battery. so im going down sunday and bringing those parts from my 90. more than likely i will get the car, but i was just hoping for an easier fix than a new tranny. i have only heard of sho trannys on 93's going out entirely.

I know you want a sho badly, I can hear it in the tone of your posts (specially the one about the TV set).

My thoughts:

Move slowly, dont rush to buy, this automatic sounds like a turd to me. You would be better off finding a good condition stick shift SHO in arizona condition. There are lots of them, you just need to be patient and get one you can trust a bit more. I see SHO's all the time that just need TLC, and not a TNT (totally new tranny).

I agree totally with this. I know in the past friends have bought cars that only needed a little work and then sunk huge amounts of time and money into them.

If I was in your position, I would save as much as I could and then put the word out that I was looking for a SHO. Tom, Nik, Mike, etc seem to have an uncanny ability to find pretty good deals.

Chuck is always telling me about Gen3's around and those too are wonderful cars, and some of them have a special go faster clunk.

I understand what you guys are saying and i agree. Im looking for an automatic for my wife, i have a 90 that i bought from tom a little while ago. Im just so sick of running all over town cause we only have 1 car right now. its a pain. Im really on the fence about this 93, i was hoping it would be easy to fix, cause the guy said the body is perfect, only has 120k and interior is pretty good, so it sounds like it could be a steal, if it was an easy fix, but the more i look into it it seems like its going to need a whole new tranny. i did receive a pm about a 95 tho so i will check that out.

Finding deals on SHO's is like catching a flu bug, its all in who you come into contact with. I find myself associating with folks who actually tell ME where they see SHO's for sale. Heck my 10 year old sees SHO's that I dont.

Regarding the ATX and the wife: You are doing the right thing, but know that a 93 with a mystery clunk (not the Rav go fast clunk) is something to stay away from. I have a 95 with 110k on it. Tranny is strong, but I count my blessings daily.

Well, my old old 95 is gone. Thought it was still around but my son's friend sold it a while ago. That would have been a good car, because I had done all of the needed work on it. My most recent 95 that I sold to Adam was totaled but its' tranny lives on in his new 93.
