Do you know what would cause that? Could an external trans cooler be retro fitted?

It could. This has been an ongoing issue and I'm not sure how much extra cooling would help. Couldn't hurt! Mine lasted to almost 200k. The rebuilds I've seen did not seem to last very long so I bailed when it started slipping. That motor was still strong though. Just remember that the fwd peppy sedans from Ford and GM were not that strong in those time periods. Not sure what they are like now. Was your souped up Focus fwd or awd? Curious if there were improvements. Lower weight certainly would help.

My Focus is FWD. I really want a 3rd Gen just to cruise and for the sound honestly. I really wouldn't plan on beating on it.

As long as you can work around the stereo setup and mileage isn't really high I would do it (unless the owner has easy tells of beating on it). Cam welded, tranny while big are able to last if you get on it at speed. I think that's why my tranny lasted so long. I never beat on it from a dig. Put my foot in it at speed.

Good to know. I have a couple of things working right now, but I will look for one in the future.
