I don't know how bad the neighborhood in Lawerence is you live in compared to my old neighborhood in the Pawtucket/Providence(RI) line but I could never "pump" my $6K+ stereo anywhere around my old apt. Too many of my buds in SUV's and even POS beat Accord's were broken into for headunits.
I always had a setting in my EQ for low highs and cut my subs/bass, I only really pumped it out of state or somewhere far, and as you can see below I could only remove the top radio face the EQ face which had nothing behind it always stayed in, it was just a "fancy" Alpine Digital EQ controller/face with a long wire to its "brain" in the trunk. Also helped my amp rack was welded with crossmembers in the the trunk

.
Basically by being over secure in my surronding neighborhood and people I only knew by first name basis or gave rides too I only had one attempt to steal my setup in 2+yrs of owning my last SHO. But was held up long enough in my drivers windows for me to hear my pager/alarm because the double layer tint I had held the windows together real good for him not just pop the locks and jump in quickly. Which is why at the time when I had to adjust something in my trunk I went to a loacl state park a good 40min away and parked near tree's to remove my box and mess with my setup/crossover, only reason though is because I have no garage access.
I know it sucks and you might feel like I do and think theres no reason why I should even go out of my way to protect my car this much but sometimes you just have to depending on your situation or how much you value what is in your car.
One suggestion I do have when you replace your headunit is try a few "mom and pop" stereo installation places for added security, because I had this kit mickey moused for my head unit at the time with brackets the extended the rear of the headunits width by having braces going horizontally that were about 3x the width of the hole in the center console so physically however much tugging you did you couldnt just pull it out without breaking 2 3/8" steel rods in the rear of the unit or its brackets.
Again man I know what it is like to have something stolen, I wish the best with the insurance.
