The instructions say to secure the rack from spinning by using an adjustable wrench on the rack teeth. Would anyone care to elaborate on this? Really have no clue how to safely secure the rack.

Pull the boot away so that the end of the rack is exposed.

Use an adjustable wrench to hold the extreme end of the rack while you try to unscrew the TRE. Be careful that 1) you don't let the rack rotate or twist and 2)that you do not mar or otherwise damage the rack itself.

I had the same question a few years ago. I was in living in Atlanta, so I called Doug Lewis. He suggested that holding the rack was not necessary as long as I was gentle and didn't use any air tools. That's what I did, and 100K miles later the original rack is still fine.

I agree. The rack is sturdy enough. Just be careful with it. Do not use the BFH to loosen anything on this job.

BTW, you are replacing the entire rod, aren't you? Highly recommended unless you did the outter last week.

Likewise, I just did the Inner TRE replacement and did not bother to secure the rack. No problems.

I also may be replacing the inner TRE or the rack as I am diagnoising this problem. I have a nasty squeek on right frt wheel area.Sounds like a heavy door hinge that needs oil, only when I turn right!Thought at first it was upper strut plate bushing but sound is coming from right behind wheel. No popping sound/feel just squeek!Got any suggestions?

Inner tie rod end condition is relatively easy to check. Just pop the outer TRE from the knuckle and see how easy (or hard)it is to move the joint around. Helms says 2-10 lbs force is good. Bet most will just flop around loosely after a few years. I know mine did on the rack I replaced this spring. Of course, one side was COMPLETELY shot.

Check your ball joint and the tension strut bushings. They're way more likely than the inner TRE to be causing a noise like you described.
