After doing a 60,000 and changing the head gaskets, my '94 atx will only start when the gas pedal is fully depressed. Once started it will not idle at all. If I let off the gas it dies. I can't pull KOER codes or reset the idle for obvious reasons. New plugs(motorcraft)and wires(Taylor). New CPS and CID. Has fuel pressure at Shrader Valve. I'm trying to avoid taking it to Ford but I have to leave for school in two weeks and don't have alot of time.
TIA

1.) Verify/correct your plug wire routing.

2) Verify proper installation of the grounding strap, the crossover tube mounting bolts, and all of the DIS mounting screws.

3) Verify timing.

Head gaskets or valve cover gaskets? The head gasket is for more complicated.

I replaced both. Is it possible that when the car got hot(it never overheated) the DIS module was toasted? I'm going to see if I can find a different DIS to test.

If the car will only start while the gas is fully depressed that indicates too much fuel being introduced into the system. Depressing the gas cuts the injectors out during cranking. Check out your injectors for a serious leak.

Edit: Check your KOEO codes first anyways.

No gas leak. Codes retrieved:
11
215-DIS Coil 1 Fault
So am I now looking for a coil pack?
headbang
That would mean Cylinders 1 and 6 aren't getting spark right?

Also ran KOER test while keeping engine running by barely pressing gas got a Cyl bank 1 O2 sensor lean. Wouldn't this further the fact that Coil 1 isn't firing?

Looking for a new coil pack? Maybe, maybe not.

That would mean Cylinders 1 and 6 aren't getting spark right? No. Coil 1 fires cylinders 1 & 5.

Wouldn't this further the fact that Coil 1 isn't firing? No.

How to test the ignition coil

Tested the coil for continuity. Got 0.9ohms for all three coils. So the coil isn't bad? That would mean that coil 1 isn't recieving the signal from the DIS. I'll post more later. I have a friend coming over to help me.
Thanks Steve

Check continuity from the DIS connector through the wiring harness. If all three coils again check OK from that point, then the DIS module is the prime suspect. This will check wiring harness integrity from the DIS through the coil.

Any update? I had the EXACT symtoms after replacing things on top. Turned out that the IAB valve connector wasn't connected. doh

OK here's the results
All thanks goes to SDpatt for the procedures thumb

Coil tested fine
Continuity and Vbat

DIS...
PIP to DIS is fine
Spout to DIS no reading
Ignition Diagnostic Monitor to DIS no reading
CID is fine
Coil power is fine

I have verified with timing light that coil 1 isn't firing.
So this would mean faulty DIS, correct?
TYSHO: I could only hope it was that simple eek!

perhaps.....bring the DIS module to a parts store for them to test....

there are machines designed to test these things.... its much easier to use them wink

I'm going to recheck things in the morning. Lightning got too bad to finish tonight. I am thinking that maybe the wire harness was pulled and maybe the wire for coil 1 isn't making contact. Just one more thing I can check. I did a wiggle test and got nothing.
Still getting 215 on KOEO.(coil 1 fault) which I already knew. lol

Check the plug wire sequence again! Its so simple and easy to mess up.

The "4-6-5" on the coil isn't very self-explanitive, hence the reason it gets forgotten a lot.

Neither Auto Zone or Ford could test the DIS module.

I am going to borrow an extra DIS from a guy nearby. At least then I'll know for sure.

In addition, I mean, check the #10 fuse in the Distributor box under the hood. If it is burned out, put a 30 in there and then have the engine running, then check for smoke in the coolant resevoir. If this is the case, R/R coolant sensor and back to a 10 fuse.
